As a rule, most modern tape recorders, players, telephones and car radios are equipped with a built-in radio receiver. But such a solution may not always be convenient, and especially if the user needs a “clean” radio receiver, without the addition of additional “bells and whistles”. In this case, several different solutions are possible: clock radio, classic or pocket receivers.
The most traditional option is the classic radio, which looks like a small tape recorder with one or two speakers, but no cassette deck. The only functional purpose of the device is to play the radio. Models in this category can boast of supporting the widest frequency range, that is, they regularly catch a wave even far from the city. The high power value makes it possible to use the device in a company, for example, during a picnic in nature.
The radio clock is a fairly standard desktop electronic clock, also equipped with a built-in tuner. An excellent solution for home use, since such devices necessarily have a display and an alarm clock function, thanks to which the device automatically starts the radio at a certain time, or simply plays a sound signal. As a rule, they do not have autonomous power supply, which is why they are practically useless away from the outlet.
Additionally, the clock radio can be equipped with a docking station for connecting smartphones and players manufactured by Apple. Some models can be used as a night lamp; in more advanced versions, the night light can synchronize with the clock and change brightness depending on the time of day.
Due to their compact size, light weight and self-contained power supply, pocket radios have good portable capabilities. But, on the other hand, the quality of acoustics and their functionality are very modest, especially in comparison with the classic version.
Any of the radios, regardless of type, is equipped with a digital or analog tuner to tune the device to the desired wave. The analog version is considered more reliable and convenient for manual search, but at the same time, the number allows you to more accurately set the frequency value, and can also automatically search and memorize favorite stations.
Also, for any model, the supported frequency range is of great importance. Since most modern music stations broadcast on the FM band, even the cheapest receiver can pick it up. In addition, modern models of classic receivers can work with the AM, SW bands. Do not forget that at a distance of more than 20 km from the city, as a rule, you can only catch VHF waves. And in order to listen to Western stations, you should find a multi-wave receiver that catches long and medium waves (LW and MW).
