Specifically, digital stabilization is carried out due to the fact that there is a reserve space along the edges of the image sensor, which initially perceives the image from the lens, but does not participate in the formation of the final “picture”. If fluctuations occur, the camera electronics compensate for them by selecting image fragments from the reserve and keeping the visible image motionless.

Due to their simplicity, compactness and low cost, digital stabilization systems are very popular in modern action cameras. Their main disadvantage is the reduction in the effective area of the image sensor, which can lead to image deterioration — in particular, the appearance of noise in low light. Manufacturers are trying to compensate for this shortcoming, but this, in turn, may affect the cost.
