A wide range of connectivity options, decent sound for the price, good "responsiveness" to a quality analog source I would like a better implementation of the digital part, the cs4398 DAC is not for everyone use Marantz PM6006 month or more i recommend it should buy |
Continuing It's all about the DAC from Cirrus Logic. I never liked the CS4398 on any player (I came to the world of high-quality sound from portable devices) I've heard; my heart has always been won over by chips from Asahi Kasei. And this implementation is no exception. When I started experimenting with different analog signal sources, I realized how much potential this amplifier has. And now it's time to say which speakers were decided upon - the Dali Oberon 5. The amp reacts very well to what acts as the DAC and preamp. If the sound with the native CS4398 seemed somewhat lacking expressiveness and emotionality, which was the main reason for choosing Marantz, the highs were delivered dryly, without a spark. But when the heavy artillery came into play, the amplifier sounded with new colors. With the nuprime uDSD, connected via an OTG cable to a smartphone (call the medics), I got the most extended and mind-blowing high frequencies in their beauty, especially with a selection of first-press digitizations from enthusiasts in the Baltics. Airiness and volume. Two words I repeated to myself while listening to their digitization of Dark Side of the Moon (the best digital version I've heard). As for the preamp: I have in my portable collection a wonderful gadget, the CEntrance DACportable, which in high gain mode and the maximum volume of the headphone jack works in line output mode. This infernal machine puts out up to 4.4 Vrms, which is quite a bit. Connecting it to the Marantz gave excellent dynamics, soon A wide range of connectivity options, decent sound for its price, good "responsiveness" to a quality analog source I would like a better implementation of the digital part, the cs4398 DAC is not for everyone use Marantz PM6006 month or more i recommend it should buy |
I'll share my 6-month experience of using the Marantz PM6006. First, I should note that these six wonderful months were preceded by 3 far less sweet ones - having already decided on the acoustics, I couldn't decide what would become the heart of the entire system. The goal was to get a device that plays files from a network storage without an external DAC. This task was accomplished despite the lack of network functions in this model. Another goal was for the device's design to fit the room's overall style and not make my wife want to relegate me to living in the speaker box. During the selection process, network stereo receivers from Onkyo, Yamaha, and Denon multi-room were ruled out. I don't regret it, although Misha Borzenkov persistently convinced me of the superiority of the Onkyo R-N855 over competitors in its price niche. Perhaps the decision was swayed by Marantz's blue LEDs. The absence of network options doesn't currently create insurmountable problems: it was decided to add a Chromecast receiver from Google, which can handle digital via optics, and the built-in DAC from Cirrus Logic (I have a fondness for the successor of the Wolfson from the days of the iBasso DX50, which marked the beginning of my plunge into the audio enthusiast's indulgence) perfectly closed the question of digital playback over the network. So, about the main thing, the sound. You can find the amp's specs online. The amplifier section is the strong side of the amp (imagine that, right?). I didn't come to this conclusion right away, and here's why. It's all about the DAC from Cirrus Logic. CS4398 didn't appeal to me in any player... Connecting it to the Marantz, I got luxurious dynamics and speed. Yes, it's a bit dry on the high frequencies (again, we're talking about the class of the amplifier, it reproduces exactly what the DAC gives it), but devilishly informative in the midrange: the guitar solos of Slash and Gilmour proved that the best can become even better. I'll mention the dynamics again – the amplifier rewarded it for the current from the preamp.
I have another device on AK – the luxury and precision L5Pro player. A confirmation of the axiom that the DAC model does not define the system's sound. Made on the same AK4490 as the CEntrance, the player as a source delivered a completely different sound picture. Beautiful prolonged highs, calm mids with an emphasis on the vocal range, deeper bass, less tight and punchy, but not crossing the boundary where rumble and muddiness on the lows begin. Overall, in terms of lows, it is one of the most beautifully sounding players on the market, and this feature is evident in its role as a source as well. Depth and layering. These are the two words I repeated while listening to the Miles Davis tribute by Chesky Records. On none of the sources did the amp produce anything from the lowest bass region, but non-synthesized low-frequency sounds, especially the double bass and kick drum, sound excellent, with very high resolution and speed on the lows.
Bi-wiring, due to the existing acoustics, could not be tested, nor could the built-in phono stage be evaluated, although who knows where the slippery path of audiophilia will lead.
An excellent amplifier, which is not embarrassing to connect.
