How to care for mattress

Transportation. Prevention starts even before mattress reaches your home, because the right transportation conditions are just as important as home care. Mattresses, especially spring mattresses ( bonnel, with independent blocks or combined), must be transported horizontally on flat surface, they must not be twisted, bent, or even placed in vertical position on any side - this can lead to deformation and damage to the internal filling. Fortunately, progress does not stand still, and manufacturers have come up with very convenient vacuum packaging. But it is found only among springless mattresses. The porous filler inside is compressed, and mattress itself is rolled into tight roll, so that the packaging takes up much less space. At home, you only need to remove the film - and mattress itself will return to its original state. But this is only one-time function, and after unpacking mattress cannot be twisted.

Smooth surface. Mattress must be placed on flat surface to avoid excessive pressure and possible deformation of certain areas. The princess in famous fairy tale felt pea under her - the same way mattress “feels” bulges and bumps, even if they do not affect your comfort in any way. Therefore, using bed with broken slats or hiding anything under mattress is bad idea. Moreover, it is worth forgetting about the old method of storing savings in mattress - there are bank deposits and safes for this.

Covers and mattress covers. Together with mattress, it is better to immediately choose cover or mattress pad and mattress pad. Mattress topper, as the name implies, is worn over the mattress to protect its upper part from sweat, dust, various contaminants and accidentally spilled liquids. In turn, mattress pad acts as shield for the bottom of mattress: it prevents abrasion, damage and dirt, especially if mattress is lying directly on the floor and not on the bed. It will be much easier for you to remove and wash the cover, mattress pad and mattress pad than it is to clean mattress. Moreover, basically they allow washing in a washing machine. To protect both sides at the same time, it is better to use cover that completely covers the mattress, or mattress pad and mattress pad in pair. This is especially true for winter / summer effect products, where each side is responsible for maintaining an optimal microclimate.

To keep mattress clean, use special covers, mattress toppers and mattress pads.

We change position. Almost any orthopedic mattress must be regularly turned over to the other side, as well as changing the head-leg position. Manufacturers recommend doing this every 3 months. Otherwise, the filler and springs will "sink" in places of maximum load, bumps will appear and mattress will not be able to provide proper support to the body. There is also small category of single-sided models that cost less and have shorter lifespan. On the one hand, they are equipped with filler for comfortable stay, and on the other, solid base made of wear-resistant materials. They cannot be turned over, but you can periodically change head and legs location . But what to do with multi-zone mattresses, which have areas of different hardness, optimized for body parts? On the contrary, they only need to be turned over, but not rotated, so as not to disrupt multizones functionality .

Correct load. Each model has maximum weight that it can support. The manufacturer must indicate this information on the packaging and in the specifications. And this value cannot be exceeded, otherwise mattress will gradually “squeeze through”, deform and lose its orthopedic properties. Please note: the manufacturer indicates the maximum load limit for one berth, so it is better to choose load “with margin” - +20 kg to your weight.

Airing. High-quality orthopedic mattress has decent height and mainly consists of several layers of different fillers inside. Therefore, to avoid the appearance of unpleasant odors and allergens, air it regularly without bed linen, blankets and bedspreads. Of course, it does not need to be taken out to the balcony or to the street - just open the windows in the room for 3-4 hours, while avoiding direct sunlight on the product. Carry out such procedures once or several times year, when it is warm outside and airing will not lead to cold. In addition, it will not be superfluous to leave mattress for a while without a sheet every couple of weeks - this will also help get rid of odors.

How to clean mattress

Cleaning mattress is prerequisite for proper operation. But this is rather problematic procedure, because you will not load the product into the washing machine and wash it by hand. Wet cleaning is not only not necessary, but even undesirable: it will not work well to dry mattress, moisture will linger inside and lead to an unpleasant odor or something worse (mold, fungus, etc.). Therefore, it is better not to stain the surface and initially protect it with the aforementioned mattress pad, mattress pad or cover. If it was not possible to prevent the appearance of complex stains, use mild furniture detergents, light soapy solution and minimum amount of water. Drying mattress with hair dryer or iron is strictly prohibited - only drying in natural way without bed linen for 4 to 6 hours. It is possible to dry-clean dirty mattress, but it is better to do this only in case of emergency and not more often than once every few years, since professional chemicals act quite aggressively on the fabric.

But there will be no harm from dry cleaning - only the benefit of eliminating dust, pollution and allergens. To do this, periodically clean the surface with regular brush or vacuum cleaner. By the way, the assortment even has special manual vacuum cleaners for bed, which clean, disinfect and fight parasites like dust mites.

Important! In no case should mattress be knocked out - this spoils its structure and can damage the spring blocks.

What is prohibited

  • Store mattress vertically - this rule applies not only to transportation, but also to storage.
  • Jump on mattress. This is especially true for families with children. Manufacturers do not even recommend standing on mattress, constantly sitting in one place and sitting on the edges. Despite the fact that by doing so you do not exceed the maximum load, the weight is not distributed evenly, but concentrated in one place. This is fraught with damage, coating deformation and the appearance of irregularities, especially for models with spring blocks.
  • Install near heat sources such as radiator or heater.
  • Store in room with high humidity. This figure should not exceed 60 - 70%, and the room should be dry and well ventilated. High humidity can lead to premature spoilage. Air dryers will help get rid of this problem.

Thus, simple rules of use, gentle cleaning and preventive methods will help to extend the life, maintain correct shape of mattress and its orthopedic effect. And this is not only saving money spent on new product, but also taking care of your health and well-being.
