Cayin N3 is a mid-level Hi-Fi player with a spectacular design and “honest” sound, released in 2017 and rightfully won a place in the list of music lovers' favorite gadgets.
Stylish classic
The first thing I want to note, taking the device in hand, is the pleasant tactile sensations that the “under the skin” insert on the back of the case gives. Metal sides and a glass front give solidity and weightiness in the literal sense. The player weighs 100 g, and it is felt. In addition to black, you can choose red and turquoise, which makes the device attractive to users of both sexes.
The manufacturer also took care of the safety of the device, putting a protective screen film and a rubber case in the kit, although a solution with a silicone bumper would be much more reasonable. The case certainly protects, but at the same time hides all the beauty of the device, turning it into an unremarkable brick. And here you have to choose what is more important, a spectacular appearance and tactility or protection against shock, dust and moisture.
Another drawback is the overly tiny touch buttons under the screen, which, moreover, are not backlit. The situation is saved by vibration feedback, which can be turned off if desired, and physical buttons, including Reset in case of freezing.
How to listen
To download and listen to music, you need a microSD card up to 256 GB, as well as wired or wireless headphones. The AptX codec is responsible for the quality of the wireless signal, but in order to fully reveal the sound, it is better to use standard 3.5 mm and high-impedance headphones up to 200 Ohm, which are supported here! In addition, the player received the most multifunctional USB Type C connector, which provides charging, access to a memory card, a USB DAC function, reading USB OTG flash drives and even working as a coaxial output with a special adapter.
The battery capacity is enough for a maximum of 12 hours in playback mode, but everything will depend on the volume and volume of the headphones.
Which sound?
Well, about the main thing in Cayin N3 — sound quality. On board is the top-end AK4490EN DAC, the already mentioned support for the Bluetooth AptX codec, a three-stage amplifier, a 10-band equalizer, which together allow you to get an incredibly warm and pleasant sound with the right pitch. High frequencies are soft and detailed, mids are bright and warm, with a high degree of intelligibility, bass is fast and structured.
In general, in terms of sound, the player can be safely placed higher than the FiiO X3 II and Hidizs AP100, for which it is not a pity to pay $180. Let's add here the possibility of using high-impedance headphones and a stylish design, and bring the Cayin N3 into an unambiguous must-have.
