Classical castanets are a percussion instrument in the form of a kind of "shell" held in one hand. Such a "shell" consists of two solid wings, which knock against each other when playing, making sharp, clicking sounds. Children's castanets often have a similar design, but there are other options — for example, a set of shutters on one handle; such an instrument must be shaken when playing, like a maracas.
