Appearance matters
For the good compactness of ultrabooks, you often have to pay with a lack of disk space. Apacer has come up with a solution to the problem by introducing a high-speed AC233 external hard drive in a sleek, glossy case. However you will have to pay for this elegance: the case is easily soiled and instantly collects prints. Therefore, in a bag with a disc, it is advisable to carry a pack of wet wipes or buy a protective cover for it.
Intelligent Power Management
Inside the protective cover is a 500 GB Western Digital laptop hard drive that runs at 5400 rpm and has 8 MB of cache. What's nice, in the disk tests, the performance turned out to be higher than officially claimed: in the Crystaldiskmark benchmark, the read speed was 112 MB / s, and the write speed was 109 MB / s. One of the features of the AC233 is the intelligent power management system, thanks to which the drive will automatically switch to power saving mode if no data is transferred for 10 minutes. This prolongs the life cycle of the disk.
Hi-Speed USB 3.1 Support
The disk itself is connected to the computer using a USB 3.1 interface, which provides the maximum data transfer rate, but if necessary, it can also work with USB 2.0. When connected to the AC233 information source, a two-colour LED indicator is used, which indicates a specific type of connection. This can be useful if a laptop or motherboard has several ports of different versions at once, but you can’t remember their position.
The drive's capacity is 3.63 TB. I partitioned it into two parts: 1.62 TB and 2 TB, both formatted in exFAT (kept the native GPT layout). I connect it to my LG G6 using an adapter, and it works without additional power. It recognizes both partitions effortlessly. I transferred 90 GB of videos from my phone to the drive in one go, and it copied at full USB 3.0 speed.
