The name Lab Gruppen (sometimes spelled Lab.Gruppen) is not particularly familiar to ordinary consumers. The fact is that this Swedish company is engaged in the production of audio equipment designed exclusively for professionals. Lab Gruppen amplifiers have won recognition due to their reliability, compact size and attractive characteristics, they are widely used in the professional audio industry.
The company's history began in 1979 in Kungsbacka, Sweden, when two engineers, Kenneth Anderson and Dan Bavholm, presented a hand-assembled mixing console. This device was used as part of the equipment at a concert by American jazz singer Eartha Kitt and proved itself from the best side. After that, the friends created several more mixing consoles and guitar amplifiers, which also attracted the attention of professionals. As a result, Lab Gruppen was registered at the end of 1979. At the very beginning, the company's office was located in a small Hi-Fi store, and initially the inventors were more involved in repairing equipment than creating new ones. Nevertheless, it was there that such amplifier models as the SS 300 and SS 1000 appeared, which were presented in 1980 at the Frankfurt Music Fair and became very successful. Sales increased and Lab Gruppen was able to move to a separate premises.
The company's further development was the continuous development of newer and more advanced equipment, the technical characteristics of which attracted professionals working with sound from different countries. From a small manufacturer, Lab Gruppen turned into one of the largest suppliers of this type of product.
In early 2000, Lab Gruppen was acquired by the British company TGI, which two years later became part of the Danish TC Group. Then, in 2015, TC Group was acquired by the British holding Music Tribe, which by that time already owned a number of famous brands, such as Behringer, Cool Audio, Midas, Turbosound, Tannoy, Klark Teknik, Aston Microphones and some others. Today, Music Tribe owns 12 trademarks under which professional audio equipment is produced.
The repeated change of owners has not had any negative impact on the further development of Lab Gruppen. The company continues to expand its product range, improve existing solutions and enter new markets.
