Founded in 1962, the Israeli company Tadiran was formed through the merger of two manufacturers: Tadir (founded in 1951, specializing in electronics) and Ran (founded in 1933, specializing in batteries). The resulting conglomerate specialized in a wide range of fields, including climate systems, refrigeration systems, medical equipment, batteries, household appliances, telecommunications solutions, and various military equipment. Eventually, the conglomerate was split into separate companies, each focusing on a specific area. Some of these companies remained independent, while others were acquired by competitors. Consequently, the Tadiran brand is now owned by several different manufacturers.
In its early years, Tadiran primarily focused on the development and production of air conditioning systems, which is the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of this brand. Thanks to a good balance of cost and quality, the company quickly became a leader in the Israeli market and began actively expanding into international markets. Tadiran was one of the first to develop and implement energy-saving technologies in air conditioning systems, which also contributed to the growing popularity of its products.
In addition to air conditioning, Tadiran also made significant advancements in the field of telecommunications. The Tadiran Telecom division became a well-known supplier of telecommunications equipment and communication solutions, providing innovative and reliable products for various sectors, including the military. Today, these products are widely used in aircraft and drones. Other areas also emerged and flourished, each showcasing the Tadiran brand's capabilities.
In 1989, the number of military orders sharply declined, leading to a significant drop in the conglomerate's revenues, resulting in losses amounting to an impressive $100 million. As a result, dozens of different companies were formed, functioning as limited liability companies. The overwhelming majority of them either immediately or after a relatively short period merged with other manufacturers. For example, Tadiran Batteries, the battery manufacturer, became a subsidiary of the French conglomerate Alcatel, while the company specializing in medical systems, Tadiran LifeCare, was acquired by Aerotel Medical Systems.
However, all these divisions and acquisitions did not affect the popularity of the products manufactured under the Tadiran brand. For example, today Tadiran air conditioners remain among the most popular in Israel and are well-regarded in other countries as well.
