— calipers and micrometers using the electronic principle of operation: size data is processed by the built-in electronic unit and displayed on the LCD display.Such devices are generally much more advanced than mechanical ones. Firstly, the measurement procedure itself turns out to be extremely simple and convenient: there is no need to carry out additional calculations according to the data from the vernier, the finished result is immediately displayed on the display. Secondly, electronics can significantly improve accuracy: even among calipers with this principle of operation, there are models with a division value of 0.01 mm (also known as "caliper micrometers"). Thirdly, various additional functions can be implemented in the design of such devices: relative measurements (comparison with a standard), change of units of measurement (from millimetres to inches and vice versa), saving several results and their further processing (for example, determining the minimum and maximum values) and even transfer data to a PC or laptop.
The main disadvantage of digital calipers and micrometers can be called a rather high cost. In addition, batteries are required for the operation of such devices — without power, the built-in electronics become useless. However in calipers this moment is partly compensated by the presence of a traditional scale on the bar (partly because the division value on such a scale is usually 1 mm, and high-precision measurements are not available with it). But digital micrometers of traditional design cannot work in principle without power.
