Drywall trowels

Trowel

— specialized devices for smoothing and leveling plaster, putty and other similar products. The trowel is a metal plate on the handle; when used, the plate is pressed against the work surface almost flat. Some trowels may have serrations on some edges (for more on these, see "notched trowel")

Note that leveling operations can also be carried out with a spatula (see the relevant paragraph); the choice between a spatula and a trowel depends more on personal preferences than on the unambiguous advantages and disadvantages of both. It is also worth saying that trowels are similar in purpose to graters (see the relevant paragraph), sometimes these names are even used as synonyms. However, there is still a difference: trowels carry out rough smoothing, graters — the final alignment.
