A beginner and intermediate level telescope from the category of universal amateur models. It is based on the Newtonian reflector optical scheme with a 130 mm objective diameter and a focal length of 650 mm, making it a good choice for observing various night sky objects—from the Moon and planets to star clusters and even some nebulous objects if the observing conditions are sufficiently dark.
The Celestron AstroMaster 130 EQ telescope is equipped with an equatorial mount with manual adjustments, allowing precise targeting and tracking of objects as they move across the sky, but it requires the user to have a basic understanding of working with equatorial systems. This mount will be beneficial for those who want to master the basics of astronomical observations and understand the principles of coordinate navigation in the sky. Additionally, the package includes Starry Night Basic software, allowing observation planning and studying astronomy in an interactive form, which will be interesting and useful for beginners.

While it's winter and the sky is more often overcast than open, I wanted to write a review of my telescope. I purposefully chose a mirror, since they are still cheaper than lens and mirror-lens ones, and at the same time, they have everything the same, except for two but. The size is often larger, the image is inverted + it is also mirrored. I chose this model as one of the most compact, but I made one mistake: I didn’t study what kind of mirrors there are, but they are (spherical and parabolic). Here it's spherical, and that's bad. When I first bought it and studied it, it seemed to me that everything was great. After a while I began to understand that this was not enough. I'll explain. A spherical mirror distorts and the image is not as clear. In principle, this is enough for a novice astronomer. The telescope itself is compact and lightweight. The mount is convenient, everything rotates easily and smoothly. True, almost all the elements are plastic. The disadvantage is that it takes a long time to exchange temperature with the environment. To start watching, you need to wait 30-60 minutes, depending on the weather. When it's hot, faster, when it's cold, longer. If you start observing immediately, distortions appear. But this is inherent in all reflecting telescopes. Not heavy. I easily take him down to the 1st floor. Due to its size it fits in an elevator and a car. Easy to assemble and disassemble. I washed the mirror once because it had accumulated dust. The finder is inconvenient, it would be much better if they made an optical one. I would like to note the eyepieces, they are quite high quality, although not the best. I bought two more, 7mm and a Barlow x2 lens. With such a telescope you can see quite distant points in space. Of course it's not 200mm, but I can see the dumbbell nebula without any problems. My friend had a 70mm telescope, and on his telescope it looked like an apple seed, gray, with barely visible edges. Here it is clearly visible, although the focus is a little blurry (due to the spherical lens). It is lightweight and quite compact for a reflex telescope. Very good mount. Ideal for the weight of the telescope. There is no windage, except in strong winds. To start astro observations, 130 mm is more than enough. It seems to me that even a lot. Price. There is a spherical lens here. This has a bad effect on focus and image quality when you look far away. This is not noticeable on nearby objects like the moon. In general, I would immediately take another telescope and spend money on it. But if you don’t have money, then this is a good option. Still, 130 mm is a lot. There was no Barlow lens included. ![]() |
I bought it as a gift for the family. This thing can make an impression; it is gigantic! We keep it in disassembled condition, so before starting to work with it, you have to spend a little time to assemble it. There was a period when the telescope stood idle for a long time, and as a result, the vertical adjustment hinge got stuck so that it couldn't be turned with a screw. I had to think about it a bit, clamped it in a vise, tried to turn the screw so that the handles started to bend, poured brake fluid, oil, Teflon, and silicone grease on it. I had to drill a hole in the plastic cap and pour brake fluid into it (for those who are not aware, this is the best remedy to get rusty parts moving). But I managed to overcome it. As for the telescope itself, it is wonderful. Yes, with standard eyepieces, you won't be able to properly look at other planets in our system, but you can examine the moon in detail. The magnification is sufficient to see a light bulb in a lantern on the neighboring street, as if it is hanging right in front of you. I don't dare to use it in the city; the neighbors would think I'm some kind of pervert. And in reality, it needs space; even at the dacha, light sources create glare. It's best to take a tent, this telescope, and go somewhere far from big cities and villages. A wonderful gift, an interesting mechanism. The moon is very well magnified, but for more distant objects (like Mars, for example), you need to change the standard eyepieces to more powerful ones, and even then it's not a fact that it will help; I haven't bought it because I'm hesitant. Overall, an interesting toy for both children and adults. The screws rusted after a year while it was in disassembled condition, I had to sweat to restore it. I think I'm breaking that aluminum from which it is made. I would like some kind of case, a bag for its storage, because keeping such a thing assembled all the time is quite difficult. ![]() |
