Video reviews

The 2020 debutant stands out from other solutions from the Dutch manufacturer with the absence of Ambilight backlighting. The move is likely driven by a desire to bring down the price of this entry-level 4K TV.

Best preparation for HDR

The important advantages of the Philips 50PUS7505 against the background of Korean competitors include support for all current HDR formats, including Dolby Vision. Therefore, the TV is capable of reproducing literally any content with an extended dynamic range. And the brightness level is quite acceptable, as a result, HDR video looks better here than on many models of a similar price segment.

Regardless of the content being broadcast, the image on the 50-inch TV pleases with high contrast and detail (the Upscaling function, which is responsible for the powerful P5 Perfect Picture processor, improves less clear video). Visibility is not perfect, but quite acceptable, and the PPI technology, which “squeezes” the refresh rate up to 1500 fps from a 60-Hz matrix, should increase the smoothness of the video sequence without the dominance of artifacts.

Sound and interfaces

If from the point of view of hardware, the Philips 50PUS7505 acoustics are unremarkable: 2 speakers of 10 W each, then thanks to the multi-channel Dolby Atmos decoder, the user can still count on the surround sound effect. But you can fully enjoy the sound if you purchase an additional audio system.

The set of interfaces is quite familiar: 2 USB, 3 HDMI, mini-Jack (3.5 mm), optical output. And for connecting to the Internet, in addition to the LAN port, Wi-Fi 4 is offered. The latter should be attributed to the shortcomings of the model, because it may not have time to load streaming video with a resolution of 3840x2160 pixels.

Branded shell

As a Smart TV, its own Linux-based operating system, Saphi, is proposed. It does not cause complaints in terms of speed or ease of movement between menu items. But the overall set of applications is still limited. If YouTube, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are really not enough for you, then you should probably look at the older versions on Android TV.

Philips 50PUS7505 is suitable for those who want an “omnivorous” TV in terms of HDR standards without overpayments.
