We chose a piano for our child to learn in music school. We didn't want to deal with a large acoustic instrument, we don't have the space, and it's costly to constantly call a tuner. Plus, we don't know if the lessons will go well, so we decided to get an entry-level digital piano. It is important to note that a digital piano differs from synthesizers with its imitation of the keys of a real instrument, and the sound has become realistically crafted, so much so that even our teacher said that a modern digital piano is an excellent option for practicing at home. We listened and chose for a long time and eventually settled on the Yamaha P-45 – the optimal combination of price and quality. The keyboard feels nice, and the mechanics are realistic; everything is made reliably and with quality. We liked the sound most of all – it features a real Yamaha grand piano, with no synthetic taste. The bass is rich, not muddy, and the upper notes, though bright, are not harsh on the ears. The only drawback is that the pedal is rather simple, not like a real one, so we purchased a solid imitation Yamaha FC4 – and now everything is perfect! I was looking for a keyboard that would sound as close as possible to an acoustic piano. And for a beginner pianist, it might seem like these keys are a fantastic choice! But that's not the case. During lessons, I play on a grand piano, so over the past few months, I've had many opportunities to compare the sound of this keyboard to the real thing. And the big problem with this piano is precisely the sound. Starting from the octave below middle C, the notes are very loud, so strong that they drown out everything I play with my right hand. Another issue is the dynamic range. Although the keys are touch-sensitive, the difference in volume between a forceful press and a gentle touch is half that of a real piano. This greatly hinders refining performance technique, and almost everything I play on it sounds poorly balanced and lacks dynamics. My husband tried to change the settings on the keyboard, but it didn't help. Weighted keys the difference in volume between pressing them and lightly touching them is half that of a real piano. From an octave below mid-C, the notes are very loud, so strong that they drown out everything I play with my right hand. ![]() |
