There are two main types of flashes: built-in and external. The latter are further divided into compact unmanaged, compact managed, and studio.
Compact unmanaged flashes are the most affordable and simplest option. They offer minimal features: it's impossible to adjust the power of the pulse, there are no additional controls, etc. These flashes are intended exclusively for undemanding users and are often used by beginner photographers.
Compact managed flashes are solutions for experienced users and professionals. Here you can adjust the power of the pulse (usually both manually and in automatic mode) and various additional modes are available. The most common type of flash, this category includes models for shooting both portraits and distant objects. Macro flashes also stand out—these models usually have a ring shape, fit onto the camera lens, and provide even lighting for the subject. The power of macro flashes is low.
As for studio flashes, as their name suggests, they are intended exclusively for indoor use. They are the most powerful and functional solutions, characterized by their impressive size. These flashes are usually designed to allow attachment of additional equipment, such as softboxes. A distinctive feature of studio flashes is the ability to set all parameters manually.
Perhaps the most important parameter to pay attention to when choosing a flash is the guide number, which determines the maximum distance of the flash from the subject.
Equally important are the type of power supply (built-in battery or regular batteries), recharge time, angle of illumination, and number of flashes. A good flash should have the ability to rotate the head. The most advanced models offer a small LCD screen intended to display operating modes.
And most importantly—when buying a flash, make sure it will work with your camera. It's best if they are of the same brand.
