Thunderbolt

— universal interface positioned as potential replacement for both peripheral connectors like USB and video outputs like Display Port. Actually, the "graphic" part of Thunderbolt is built on the Display Port standard (see the relevant paragraph) and is similar in capabilities to it. Moreover, the first versions of this interface (v1 and v2) use connectors that are absolutely identical to the mini Display Port (however, not every Thunderbolt monitor can be normally connected to regular miniDP, this possibility should be specified separately in each case). In turn, Thunderbolt v3 is built on USB Type C connector (see the relevant paragraph); and often for both types of connection — both Thunderbolt and USB Type C itself — one hardware connector is responsible, switched to one mode or another as needed.

In general, Thunderbolt of all versions is actively used in Apple computers and laptops, and in equipment from other manufacturers it is found mainly in version v3.
