Updated silk tweeter, 3 unique sound modes, DSP with 25 equalizer presets for room adjustment, built-in LCD screen and mobile application for additional settings, front bass reflex.

Despite criticism of the first generations of Rokit, KRK has been steadily improving the series and, one might say, achieved universal recognition after the release of the 4th generation at the end of the last decade. In 2024, the company introduced the fifth generation of Rokit with an updated tweeter and integrated DSP technology that offers three unique sound modes: Mix, Create and Focus. Mix mode is designed for mixing and mastering, providing a smooth response in frequency and phase. Create emphasizes bass and high frequencies, adding a wow effect when simply listening to music. Well, Focus emphasizes mids and critical analysis of the mix, making it easier to find problems when recording instruments.

Otherwise, the KRK Rokit 5 G5 is a two-way monitor with a 5-inch Kevlar cone and a 1-inch silk tweeter. Power comes from a built-in 55-watt Class D amplifier, and the bass reflex is located at the front, allowing the Rokit 5 G5 to be placed closer to a wall without worrying about the accuracy of the low-frequency response. The KRK Rokit 5 G5 supports up to 25 EQ combinations for room adjustment, helping to minimize acoustic distortion in an unprepared room. These settings are easily adjusted using the built-in LCD screen on the rear panel or the KRK mobile app.

In operation, the Rokit 5 G5 stands out with a fairly balanced sound with clear high frequencies and traditional KRK dense bass. But it is important to understand that the younger model with a compact 5-inch speaker is still slightly limited in terms of bass (lower threshold 54 Hz) and does not produce the same sub-bass as the older Rokit 7 G5 and Rokit 8 G5. Otherwise, this model is ideal for both small studios and as a universal audio system for the home. Also, a pair of Rokit 5 G5 surprisingly shows itself well as computer speakers for a gaming system.

Mackie MR624 is a mid-size model for sound recording and mixing with a 6.5-inch speaker and a proprietary logarithmic waveguide. In the review of the younger model Mackie MR524, we already said that this line was unfairly deprived of attention from both the press and users. Although in terms of quality and purity of sound, they are not much inferior to the critically acclaimed JBL LSR series. Both Mackie's not-so-great reputation and the lack of advertising from the brand are to blame for this.

The key feature of the MR series is the logarithmic waveguide developed by Mackie and previously used in the professional HR and XR models. Thanks to this, as well as the built-in "Acoustic Space" switch that allows you to adapt the sound of the speakers depending on their position, the Mackie MR624 provide an extremely wide position for optimal listening. In comparison, most old-school professional monitors need optimal placement according to the isosceles triangle rule, otherwise the sound will be distorted, and the user will simply not hear all the details of the mix. They also do not tire after long listening sessions.

Considering their price range, the Mackie MR624 demonstrate high sound quality. The bass sounds clear and pronounced, but does not stick out from the general frequency spectrum, the mids are well detailed, and the “highs” sound clean and pleasant, without excessive brightness of the ribbon tweeter. They offer clear and accentuated low frequencies, detailed mids and surprisingly smooth highs. The sound balance can be called impeccable (note: for their price!), and the proprietary amplifiers (65 W per speaker) provide the same accuracy of sound at any volume, without the need to crank them up to maximum. Due to this factor, they show themselves equally well as monitors for a home studio, music speakers or multimedia acoustics for movies and games.

Smooth and balanced sound at all volume levels, wide listening area, Class D amplifiers with high volume reserve and low harmonic distortion, front bass reflex.

The JBL 306P MkII is the second iteration of the popular, critically acclaimed studio/home nearfield monitors. They boast a detailed, smooth and balanced sound that will appeal equally to the aspiring producer/beatmaker, the bedroom producer, the music lover looking for an honest and affordable alternative to home hi-fi systems or the gamer in search of quality 2.0 speakers.

JBL 306P MkII are equipped with 112 W class D amplifiers (56 W for the LF and HF sections), which provide good dynamics and sufficient volume reserve even in quiet rooms. At the same time, the amplifier provides clean and balanced sound both at low and very high volumes with a minimum level of distortion. And thanks to the use of a proprietary waveguide, JBL 306P MkII provide a wide and precise stereo panorama with an extremely wide choice of optimal listening positions. Well, their midrange elaboration is excellent (for their price).

The monitors also support inputs on balanced XLR and TRS connectors, making it easy to integrate them into various studio and home systems, minimizing noise. The presence of input signal level controls and high-frequency correction (-2 dB, 0 dB, +2 dB) simplifies adjusting the acoustics to the room. And the use of a front bass reflex eliminates problems with installing acoustics in limited spaces, allowing you to avoid negative impact on the sound of low frequencies when placed close to the walls.

The cost is 2 times lower than Adam AX5, branded ribbon tweeter U-ART, quite distinct and accentuated bass for a 5-inch speaker.
The specific coloration of the high frequencies may not be to everyone's taste.

Despite the huge popularity of the Adam AX series studio speakers, they have always been expensive and beyond the budget of most home Hi-Fi enthusiasts. To the credit of the German manufacturer, it caught the trend of reducing prices and optimizing in time, introducing a new line of affordable Adam TV monitors in 2018. These models use a U-ART high-frequency ribbon tweeter with an HPS Waveguide, which provides crystal-clear high frequencies, while expanding the optimal listening point so that the listener does not have to sit directly in front of the speakers.

The Adam T5V is the most affordable and compact model in the entire line (note: this model is sold individually). It is built on a 5-inch diffuser and uses a separate 70-watt D-class amplifier. In terms of sound, the T5V provides excellent balance and detailing of the top. The bass sounds clear and readable, but in some cases the bass seems to be slightly twisted and slightly overlaps the midrange. However, this issue is easily resolved with the built-in HF and LF controls located on the back of the speaker. For example, when the bass is reduced by 2 dB, the overall sound becomes more balanced, and the detailing in the mid and high-frequency spectrum improves. However, here everyone has their own preferences and someone, on the contrary, will probably prefer to add a little low frequencies.

Compared to the older and more expensive models of the AX series, the T5Vs sound a little more modest and reserved in everything, but they also cost more than 2 times less. The high frequencies are especially pleasing, they are well detailed and clearly expressed, as is usually the case with Adam. It is important to note that some people do not like the “silky” sound, especially when it comes to studio mixing and critical listening to demo recordings. But for recording in a home studio, listening to music, games and movies, the ribbon tweeter is ideal.

Bass performance on par with larger monitors, a wide range of connectivity options including USB C and Bluetooth, a front port, 7 room tuning modes, and an impressive size-to-power ratio.

Founded by JBL alumni, California-based Kali Audio made a name for itself early on with the highly successful Kali LP line of budget studio monitors in 2019 (note: we reviewed the LP-6). The new series, called the LP-UNF, uses a similar concept to its predecessors, also using a 3D waveguide to create a detailed, lifelike stereo image, allowing you to clearly perceive all the elements of a mix in space. And a large front-firing bass reflex with a unique shape designed with hydrodynamics in mind reduces noise and low-frequency compression, allowing the speakers to be placed close to walls.

Despite their dimensions, the Kali Audio LP-UNF are equipped with fairly powerful D-class amplifiers with a power of 80 W each (note: the same was in the larger LP-6) and stand out not only for their high-quality sound, but also for how powerful and “massive” they sound. Despite their compact dimensions, the 4.5-inch low-frequency speaker with high output with an extended frequency range and low distortion (39 Hz, distortion factor less than 2%) sounds comparable to larger 5- and even 6-inch monitors. At the same time, the midrange provides excellent detail and volume, and the high frequencies are not overloaded and do not distort, which is especially important for precise work with mixes.

I also liked that the LP-UNF are completely in line with the spirit of the times and are not designed exclusively for studio work. The point is that in addition to the classic RCA + Jack (6.3 mm) pair, you can use a wireless Bluetooth receiver or USB C for connection, simplifying the connection to laptops and smartphones. The company's engineers also improved the room adjustment system with seven different options for placing the speakers on separate stands, on a table, away from the wall or close to it. In general, we can say that Kali has produced a very successful pair of speakers that takes the best from classic studio monitors, mixing high-quality sound with the convenience of compact semi-professional speakers like the recent iLoud Micro.
