Model overview based on user reviews
The Nikon D5100 kit 18-55 is a highly regarded entry-level DSLR, praised for its excellent photo quality and low noise at high ISO. Users appreciate its rotating display, which aids in challenging shooting situations, and its comfortable grip. The camera is noted for its good color rendition and convenient menu. While the battery life is generally seen as adequate, some users mention it could be improved. The kit lens (18-55mm) is considered sharp, though some find it lacking compared to more advanced lenses. The camera's video capabilities are decent, but not a replacement for a dedicated video camera. Overall, the Nikon D5100 is recommended for beginners and amateurs looking for a budget-friendly DSLR with great image quality.

Great camera for its price
8 October 2011
Excellent camera for its price, don't read the opuses of professionals. Everything they write is only of interest to them, and the evidence and debates about what's better or worse can largely be ignored. Look for what interests you, compare, go to the store, hold it in your hands and buy what you like. You'll be the one using it, so use what you enjoy. Happy photographing and good luck :)
I bought what I wanted.
In my arsenal, I have 3 lenses: a 35mm, an 18-105mm, and a 55-200mm.
I use them approximately in this percentage: 40, 40, 20.
The photos turn out great, the grip is comfortable; those who find it unsuitable probably have wider hands.
The video is tolerable, but a camera can't excel at both photography and video recording. However, it's more than enough for home use, and I don't need anything more since I'm not a professional operator or photographer.
The menu button should have been placed on the right side of the screen, although it's not critical.
Only one customizable button, also not critical.
Weak battery. Currently looking for a battery pack.

In my opinion, the best model for a beginner.
3 December 2011
I was choosing between Nikon, Canon, and Sony. I settled on the D5100 due to its low noise at high ISO. I debated for a long time between the 3100 and the 5100. The former has better-designed camera ergonomics, but the body is smaller, yet the 5100 feels better in the hand, and as for the swivel screen... you can always turn it so it acts like a non-swivel one. Overall, I'm satisfied.
At first glance, I liked the quality of the photos. Low noise at high ISO. Although the swivel screen is hard to call a big plus, as you could do without it, it is still convenient.
Few control buttons. Only one customizable button, which means if I want to turn on HDR, I'll have to go into the menu. It's difficult to focus manually. I used the Canon 600 - it's easier.

The camera is excellent, I already wrote about it. "Experts" need to study the manual very well.

...here I want to say, everyone writes about the lack of battery, then I can’t understand, I drove my 5100 to the fullest, 740 shots and only 25% of the discharge. I shoot a lot and everything repeats. Or I got such a battery, I bought the camera through online store or????
A lot has been written about them, I won’t repeat them.
there are few of them, they are not significant...

Question about Nikon D5100 kit 18-55

Nikon D5100 features:

Shooting modes and functions:

Shooting modes are switched using the rotary dial located on the top panel of the camera.
As with any SLR camera, there is a group of PASM modes:
  • P mode - the camera automatically selects shutter speed and aperture for optimal exposure
  • Mode A - you set the aperture, the camera determines the shutter speed
  • S mode - you set the shutter speed, the camera selects the aperture.
  • M mode - manual mode. Both shutter speed and aperture are set.
In the PASM mode group, you cannot make the ISO setting automatic - you must definitely set a specific ISO value. Auto ISO is only available in "easy" modes.

AUTO Mode:

Almost all parameters are determined by the camera in accordance with the current situation. The flash fires automatically when the subject is poorly lit. The set of changeable parameters in this mode is limited.

Story programs:

The Nikon D5100 has seven scene programs arranged in separate positions on the mode dial: Portrait, Landscape, Child, Sports, Macro, Night portrait, and No flash.

Effect Modes:

Nikon D5100 has 7 different effects:
  • Grainy B&W: Creates grainy black and white images
  • Soft Focus: Provides soft focus
  • Toy camera effect
  • Miniature effect: used to sharpen part of an image
  • night vision effect
  • silhouette effect
Effects may only be available when shooting in live view. In order to activate the Live View mode, a special lever has been added near the mode wheel.

Active D-Lighting function:

Active D-Lighting is useful in high contrast environments. It helps to brighten the darkest areas, while avoiding overexposure.

Video:

Nikon D5100 can shoot video at 1280x720 30 fps and 1920x1080 24 fps.
Nikon D5100 is equipped with a built-in video editor. Its capabilities do not differ much from the video editors built into cameras - you can cut off the excess, as well as save a single frame, selected and stopped in pause mode.

Display:

The Nikon D5100 is equipped with a 3-inch LCD swivel screen. Its resolution is 921,000 pixels. On the display, the user can make shooting settings and read information about certain parameters.

Viewfinder:

The viewfinder in the Nikon D5100 is equipped with a rubber eyecup. Frame coverage is 95 percent.

Advantages and disadvantages:

Pros:
  • Active D-Lighting
  • In-Camera RAW Processing
  • When shooting video, it is possible to adjust the exposure parameters on the fly
  • Availability of a video editor
  • HDMI output available
  • Possibility to connect an optional GPS-module or wired remote control
  • Swivel screen
  • 7 different effects.
Minuses:
  • No built-in optical stabilization
  • Work with lenses is possible only with the AF-S series, equipped with a built-in focus motor
