The Nikon Z8 is a powerful full-frame camera, released as the successor to the popular Nikon D850 DSLR. However, it is more apt to compare the model to the flagship mirrorless Nikon Z9, differing primarily in the absence of a vertical battery grip. Inside, the camera houses a 45.7-megapixel full-frame image sensor, mounted on a movable stabilizing platform. The effectiveness of the in-body stabilization system is rated to compensate up to 6 stops of shutter speed or exposure.

The model entirely lacks a mechanical shutter, operating exclusively with an electronic one. When shooting in RAW + JPEG, the camera achieves a continuous shooting rate of up to 20 fps, and in full-frame JPEG format up to 30 fps. Video recording on the Nikon Z8 body reaches high-resolution 8K at up to 60 fps (N-RAW format). In 4K resolution, it supports 12-bit video shooting in ProRes RAW format at the same 60 fps.

For greater color choice freedom, footage can also be recorded in 10-bit ProRes 4:2:2 HQ format, providing operators with additional profile options, such as improved N-Log and HLG. The model boasts an advanced autofocus system with intelligent subject recognition in the frame (including a new "Airplanes" tracking mode). As for on-board equipment, the mirrorless camera includes a high-resolution electronic viewfinder, a 3.2-inch touchscreen on a tilting hinge, and two memory card slots. The body configuration implies delivery of the camera without interchangeable lenses.
