8 megapixels. As the main camera, such small sensors with a diagonal of only 1/4 inch are now rarely used, only in ultra-low-cost Android Go smartphones. Much more often they are used as a front camera or a wide-angle camera. The big trio of sensor manufacturers (Sony, Samsung, OmniVision) are less and less interested in this market segment. Therefore, new players come here: Hynix and GalaxyCore. The first is known primarily as a manufacturer of operational and flash memory. And the second specializes in webcams, action cameras and video recorders. Even smaller matrices can sometimes be used as front cameras - 5 MP, 1/5 ".

The physical dimensions of camera matrices.

13 megapixels. As well as its 16 MP variation, these are already quite decent 1/3-inch front cameras. Which are still often put as the main camera in low-cost smartphones. The Japanese company Sony and the Korean Samsung have long concentrated on more impressive matrices. Therefore, the Chinese manufacturer OmniVision, which has long been famous for its thin sensors, almost single-handedly rules the ball here. They are needed primarily for front cameras, because they cannot protrude above the smartphone screen. But due to the small thickness, moving optics often do not fit and, accordingly, there is no autofocus - only fixed to infinity.

50 megapixels. The new sensor format that replaced 48 MP is perhaps the most diverse. In inexpensive smartphones, a 50 MP Samsung IsoCell JN1 matrix with a diagonal of 1/2.7 inches is most often used as the main camera. In theory, it is smaller than the previous GM1 (1 / 2.0", 48 MP). But in practice, due to the thinner optics and, accordingly, greater aperture, it takes pictures just as well. In the pre-flagship smartphones, there is a large 50 MP Sony Exmor IMX766 sensor 1 /1.5". And in the flagships - IMX989 with a diagonal of a whole 1 inch, which previously only mirrorless cameras could boast of.

Tecno Spark 9 Pro is probably the best camera phone in the sub-$150 price segment right now. If the 50 MP main camera is now the standard, then the 32 MP front camera stands out against the competition with only 8 MP. The size of the front camera matrix is 1/2.8 inch, which almost corresponds to the main camera 1/2.7". 64 megapixels. This type of matrix uses Quad Bayer 2x2 technology, which combines pixels by four to increase aperture. There are two image resolutions to choose from. By default, photos are taken in 16 MP format - the detail is lower, but the aperture ratio is higher, which is also optimal for night shooting. But if you wish, you can switch to the full 64 MP, which is effective only on a bright sunny day. But such pictures can be very zoomed. There are two widely used sensors: IsoCell GW3 and Exmor IMX682. The first is smaller than 1/2.0 inch, and the second is larger than 1/1.7 inch. In addition, 64 MP sensors are guaranteed to support electronic video stabilization.

So far, the 200 MP IsoCell HP1 sensor exists only on paper, but 108 MP is already widely used. Moreover, there are as many as three modifications: with a diagonal of 1/1.3", 1/1.5" and 1/1.7". It is the latest IsoCell HMX, the smallest version, that is now used in the largest number of third-party smartphones. Samsung saved the largest IsoCell HM3 matrix for its flagships of the Galaxy S line. At the same time, it is still smaller than the 50 MP Sony Exmor IMX989 with a diagonal of 1 inch. Even combining 3x3 pixels to maximize aperture does not save. Another confirmation that the number of megapixels is not the main thing.
