If you are ready to independently search for a suitable travel backpack, we recommend using the specialized section of our catalog with a convenient selection by parameters.

1. Volume

The optimal scenario for using a hiking backpack depends on its capacity. So, the longer the planned hike, the more things and equipment you will need, and, accordingly, a more capacious model will be required.

Below are some basic guidelines for choosing the capacity of hiking backpacks:

  • up to 30 liters - these are models for one-day trips and hiking, that is, trips without spending the night in the open air. By the way, the least capacious backpacks of this category can replace solutions for active recreation ;
  • from 30 to 50 liters. A good choice for weekend trips. This capacity is enough for equipment, taking into account one or two overnight stays in nature. Note that so-called assault and mountaineering backpacks also assume a similar volume. These are models with a higher price tag (compared to their counterparts), which are used for mountain climbing, moving in hard-to-reach places, etc.;
  • from 50 to 80 liters. This volume is considered a "classic" for standard medium-length hikes (from 5 to 7 days). It will fit a tent and a sleeping bag, warm clothes, and a solid supply of food. The typical features of models of this capacity include a rigid frame, but there are exceptions to the rule;
  • from 80 liters and more. Such backpacks are suitable for long trips into nature and difficult expeditions, including winter ones. More warm clothes and spare clothes will fit here. There will also be room for specific loads: for example, an explorer will be able to take the necessary video or photo equipment, a speleologist - a large supply of rope, etc. Almost without exception, such voluminous backpacks have a rigid back.

A very roomy backpack - large and heavy, such solutions are suitable for experienced tourists.

The above recommendations allow for deviations. Thus, now in the tourism industry there is a clear trend towards reducing the weight of equipment, and accordingly, a decrease in the capacity of the backpack. Even relatively inexpensive tents, sleeping bags, and camping mats are becoming lighter: if earlier a week-long hike forced the user to carry up to 30 liters, now the figure is reduced to 20 or 15 kg. Plus, there are more "lightweights" - hikers who literally travel "light" and in every possible way reduce the weight of their tourist luggage. However, beginners should not immediately focus on this category. Tourists usually come to this philosophy with experience.

When calculating the optimal volume of a backpack for a hike, it is also worth considering the following points:

  • Season and climate. In the hot summer on the plains you can do without bulky warm clothes and a sleeping bag with 2-layer insulation, which is not the case in early spring, late autumn or highlands;
  • existing equipment. Yes, ideally, you first choose a backpack, and then everything else for tourism under it. But if you got your tent from your parents, and your sleeping bag was a birthday present, then you will take them on your first hike. If any of this is heavy and bulky, look at backpacks with a larger capacity;
  • brand specifics. It happens that two models from different brands have the same declared capacity, but in practice the capacity is different. Here, reviews from other users can come to the rescue;
  • basic rules of packing. It is better for a beginner to take a model with some reserve in capacity. He will come to many basics of placing and tamping things as he gains experience.

Below is a diagram of how to properly pack a backpack for a hike. Based on this information, you will understand whether everything you need will fit into a model of a particular volume:

Basic principles of packing things in a hiking backpack.

2. Back type

Modern backpacks for hiking can be divided into two large groups according to the type of back (suspension system):

  • soft (or frameless);
  • rigid (frame).

Note that earlier you could often find another type - frame backpacks. They use a heavy frame (usually made of metal), which allows you to carry a load of up to 50 kg, and the frame itself is separated from the bag for things. But today such models are rare.

Frameless backpacks

They have a soft, usually anatomical back. These models are lightweight, can be easily folded for storage, but are not designed for heavy loads (usually have a small or medium volume). Even with moderate luggage, they may not be very comfortable for novice users. The role of the frame here is often given to a sleeping pad, which helps to keep the shape of the product and simplifies the process of packing things.

Sometimes the back of a soft backpack differs from the front surface only by the presence of shoulder straps.

Advantages of frameless backpacks:

  • compactness;
  • ease of storage and transportation (without contents);
  • relatively light weight;
  • Overall, the price is more affordable.

Cons:

  • cause discomfort when carrying heavy loads;
  • distribute the load worse.

Hard-frame backpacks

The trick of frame backpacks for hiking is the presence of a rigid back. Here, hard plates made of metal or polymer materials are used. Plastic is more often used in less voluminous models, and metal - in more capacious ones. In any case, such a frame makes the product somewhat heavier. But a rigid back helps to distribute the load better, transferring the weight from the shoulders and torso to the waist and even legs. As a result, even fairly heavy luggage is more comfortable to carry.

The frame design can be different:

  • the simplest option is two parallel rods;
  • Other common versions are X-, U- or V-shaped systems;
  • more complex design with lattice or other frame variations.

Many manufacturers come up with their own suspension systems, sometimes patenting them. The more complex its design and the higher the quality of the materials, the higher the price tag. At the same time, there is also a share of the marketing component here, that is, the pursuit of the most innovative back is far from always justified.

The rigid frame is increasingly complemented by a ventilation mesh.

Advantages of frame backpacks:

  • keep their shape, helping to pack gear;
  • suitable for long hikes and carrying heavy loads;
  • distribute the load effectively;
  • as a rule, they win overall in terms of reliability and durability.

Cons:

  • heavier and more expensive than frameless analogues;
  • take up more space when stored (although sometimes the plates are made removable).

Which backrest option should you choose? Beginners are better off starting with frame models so that the first hike doesn't discourage you from repeating it. Although, in general, for short and easy trips you can consider soft backpacks, and for longer and more difficult ones - hard ones.

3. Suspension system features

The presence or absence of a frame is not the only important aspect of a backpack's suspension system. For example, the presence of ventilation and/or soft inserts greatly affects ease of use.

Many manufacturers today use a mesh tension back, which really does a good job of removing excess heat and increasing comfort when wearing in hot weather (and not only). But there are also other solutions with porous inserts, textured air channels, etc.

Soft inserts on the back are used to prevent the backpack from pressing on the body and rubbing the skin. The number of such "softeners" may differ, as well as the quality of materials, durability, and real practical benefits. It is better to check everything in practice.

Another really useful feature of the backpack suspension system is the adjustable back. It allows you to move the position of the shoulder straps and waist belt up or down. As a result, users of different heights and body types will be able to find the best fit for themselves.

Plus , the following elements are responsible for the correct distribution of loads and ensuring comfort:

  • Height-adjustable chest straps. They help shift the load from the shoulders to the upper body;
  • comfortable shoulder straps. Ideally, they should be wide and soft enough, otherwise they will press and rub. So, the larger the area of contact of the straps with the body, the more evenly the load is distributed;
  • waist belt. It is almost always present in a medium- and large-volume hiking backpack. A good hip belt should also be soft and wide, and the middle of the wings should ideally be located not on the lower back, but above the pelvic bones. This will help with proper load distribution - from the shoulders to the hips.

The adjustable backrest may have adjustment tips for different heights (option S).

Comfort of fit is an individual criterion. It is quite difficult to take into account all the nuances without trying on the model with the contents. But if the back is adjustable, as is the chest strap with shoulder straps, then the versatility of the backpack increases.

4. Men's, women's and children's backpack

Among the hiking models, solutions for women and children are singled out as a separate category. Children's's backpacks differ in capacity: for the youngest tourists, the volume is about 20 liters, and for teenagers - up to 40 liters. Since children grow, an adjustable back is often provided here. The design is usually bright and clearly visible from afar.

Women's backpacks for hiking also differ in design, color and capacity. But their main feature is taking into account the anatomical features of the fair sex. Here, shaped shoulder straps are often offered that do not press on the chest, the back is optimized for shorter stature, and a waist belt with an increased reserve of adjustments in length (girth) can also be used.

In general, girls and children really need to choose profile models, because it’s not just about design.

5. Equipment and pockets

The typical organization of the interior of a hiking backpack involves a large main slot and a top flap. The main slot contains all the largest and heaviest items - clothes and shoes, a tent and sleeping bag, etc. The flap not only provides easy access to the main slot and protects the contents, but also provides one or more pockets. This is where you usually place what you need to have at hand.

Sometimes the overall interior space is also divided by partitions, which helps to avoid clutter. But in this case, it is more difficult to get to some things. To avoid this, additional access is welcome - bottom, side and/or front opening. In almost any scenario, at least one more zipper in the main slot will definitely not be superfluous.

Hiking backpacks usually have a lot of different external pockets, including:

  • upper;
  • frontal;
  • lower;
  • side ones - with a zipper and open (for water bottles);
  • on the waist belt;
  • on the strap.

It is worth highlighting the crab pocket separately, with the help of which various voluminous items can be fixed on the outside of the front part - outerwear, a cauldron, etc.

A crab pocket will definitely come in handy for hikers.

In addition to the “crab”, the design of a hiking backpack may also include other elements for securing various accessories on the outside:

  • elastic cord;
  • gear loops;
  • ski or board mount.

When choosing, you should also pay attention to the compression strap system. The upper straps are almost always provided in a pair with the valve and serve to fix it. The side and lower straps help regulate the volume of the backpack when partially filled. They will allow you to "squeeze" the model, and the contents will not "dangle" inside. Sometimes front straps are also provided. They do not serve for compression, but act as fasteners for various things (a tourist mat, clothes, etc.).

The system of ties and additional fasteners allows you to fix almost as much on the outside as on the inside.

The more pockets and richer the equipment, the more convenient and versatile the backpack. But all the bells and whistles affect the price, and some features partially duplicate each other: for example, a crab pocket, front straps and/or a board mount. One of these three is usually quite enough.

6. Additional options

Here are some interesting and useful features that can be very useful in a hiking backpack:

  • outlet for a hydration pack. A convenient feature not only for athletes, but also for hikers. The drinking system is placed in the backpack, and a tube with a valve allows you to quench your thirst on the go;
  • rain cover included. Rain cover for a backpack is often found in mid-range and advanced models. A separate pocket is also provided for the rain cover, so there will be no problems with storing this accessory;
  • removable additional backpack. In hiking models, this option is often implemented by detaching the top valve. But there may be other variations, like in the Thule Landmark 60L : here the front pocket is removable. A small backpack on a hike is suitable for radial exits - short-term ascents to mountain peaks or walks near the camp;
  • reflective elements. This is a more typical option for urban models, but it can also be useful in hiking backpacks. Firstly, in the evening, reflectors on the fabric will allow the group not to lose the participants and "find" colleagues walking in front with a flashlight. Secondly, individual routes may include sections near the roadway, and the visibility of the tourist in the dark will increase the level of safety;
  • adjustable volume or Roll top. These features are rare in hiking backpacks, but they can add versatility. If the volume can be adjusted by 5 or even 15 liters, the model is suitable for both a weekend trip and a week-long hike. Plus, the Roll top closing system provides wide top access and ease of loading/unloading things.

A complete raincoat is a useful thing for hiking.

Some models may also include compartments for wet or dirty items, carabiners, whistles, and other small items. You definitely shouldn't try to combine all of the above options in one backpack. But some of the features can be really useful.

7. Materials and weight

Most often, backpacks for hiking are made of synthetic fabrics - polyester and nylon, a little less often - from polyamide. All of them combine affordable cost, light weight, a fairly high level of strength and wear resistance. To increase reliability, a special rip-stop weave is often used. It is easy to detect on your own - a sign of "protection from tearing" are textured small diamonds on the fabric.

This is what Ripstop reinforcement looks like - protection against tearing.

The textiles used to sew the backpack differ in density. It is indicated in this form 400D, 600D, etc. The higher the value, the denser the material, but, accordingly, the higher the weight of the product. Usually, "thicker" fabrics are used for the bottom, which is more susceptible to negative impacts.

Among the most reliable, but not lightweight materials, Cordura stands out, which has proven itself well in tactical backpacks. More balanced in weight and reliability can be considered such fabrics as Oxford and Dyneema. However, the relevant information is not always indicated, so if the density is known, then this is already a good hint.

Plus, there is also an eco-trend that is promoted by leading manufacturers. They are increasingly using recycled materials to make models.

The total weight of the product without contents is affected not only by the fabric used, but also by the volume, as well as the presence or absence of a rigid back. Soft models often weigh up to 1.5 kg, while frame models - from 2 to 4 kg. In general, the optimal values can be considered around 2.5 - 3 kg. But there are plenty of exceptions to the rule: leading brands use high-quality dense materials that make the structure heavier, but a well-thought-out suspension system (also not light due to metal inserts) makes an empty backpack literally imperceptible on the shoulders.

Speaking about the materials of manufacture, it is also worth mentioning the fittings. Fasteners, fasteners, zippers should be of high quality and reliable, and work smoothly. During the initial inspection, these little things should also be paid attention to. The recognized leader in backpack fittings is the Japanese brand YKK. And if the use of these elements is declared, then they should last a long time.

8. Brands

There are many specialized brands among manufacturers of backpacks for hiking. What can we say if even Xiaomi, which produces almost everything, has not yet looked into this niche.

Hiking backpacks also differ in color, but this is a matter of taste.

Top brands of hiking backpacks include American manufacturers Osprey, Lowe Alpine and Gregory, as well as European brands such as Deuter and Tatonka(both Germany), Ferrino(Italy), FjallRaven(Sweden). These are the market leaders, whose products are in the advanced and upper price segment.

The middle class is represented by products from Thule, Kelty, Sierra Designs, Pinguin, as well as some backpacks from the Ukrainian company Terra Incognita(it also has budget solutions).

SKIF(Ukraine), Naturehike and One Polar(both China) offer fairly inexpensive models for hiking.

9. Conclusion

When choosing a hiking backpack, maximum attention should be paid to the volume and suspension system (type of back, adjustment options, etc.). The next step is to decide on pockets and equipment, and then look at additional options (outlets for a hydration pack, raincoat, etc.), materials and weight of the product. And taking into account the available budget (and the seriousness of your intentions to become a hiker), you should choose a brand. Moreover, if you are in the hiking theme seriously and for a long time, then it is probably worth paying extra for a really cool backpack from a famous manufacturer. Otherwise, you will still come to this after a budget model.
