PlayStation 2 can be used not only as a set-top box, but also as a media centre. Having been on the market for several years now, the Playstation 2 is still selling well and even competing with the latest Playstation 3.
PlayStation 2 can no longer provide a decent (nowadays) level of graphics and gameplay. However, thousands of wonderful games have been written for it - in 2007 alone, about 8K new ones were written. The cost of the device itself is extremely low. Definitely, the Playstation 2 will be popular for quite a long time and remain an excellent acquisition.
