A very decent external hard, because for the period of use for more than a year there are no complaints. I use it to store work projects, mostly videos, some photos. The average file size is 300-500 mb. With such volumes, the recording speed is 120-130 mb / s. It suits me just fine. I did not drop it, so I can’t tell you the characteristics of reliability from falls. But 819 inclusions were made, and a bunch of files were uploaded. And for me the most important thing is reliability. The hard drive itself is quite compact, it does not heat up (according to statics, it did not heat up more than 44 degrees, which I consider an excellent result. The speed depends on the size of the files. Photos of 15-30 mb are recorded at a speed of 25-45 mb/s, large ones up to 157 mb/s, but the average, as I wrote above, is about 130 mb / s. For work or a personal archive - ideal. Relatively fast. Reliable. No speed problems, stable. Compact. Will not overheat. Perhaps I would like a faster connector, but this is already more expensive. ![]() |
A month later, there were strange recording issues and a very loud operating noise (a soft crunch). I tested it myself and saw (screenshot 1) the recording speed drop to ZERO after 1.2TB (that's how much data I had on it at the time of the first glitches). The Victoria program showed an even more alarming situation (screenshot 2) - a bunch of sectors with a response time of 3 seconds!!! with a normal of 25-100ms, and this after one month of use. I contacted the service center - and they sent me a statement that they tested it and everything was okay, the hard drive meets the normal parameters. That's how 'normal' hard drives from Toshiba are - defects appeared after a month (or maybe immediately), but it's normal for them. Either due to the chip crisis, service centers were given a "manual" to only replace dead ones, while those that work somewhat are marked as normal. Don't buy Toshiba hard drives - save your nerves and money. Price-volume ratio reliability, service ![]() |

Simple and tasteful
If you're looking for a simple, decent-sized external drive, hoping to spend as little as possible, Toshiba's Canvio Basics New is a great option. It boasts high linear speeds for copying and writing, extremely low noise and vibration levels, as well as a moderately durable and stylish body that is not afraid to shake a little in a bag.
Practical materials and minimalist design
The case of Canvio Basics New is made of strong plastic with a minimum of identification marks. On the matte front panel, we are met only by a small Toshiba logo and a tiny LED, behind the same rough non-slip plastic with rounded side edges. It's a pity that the guys from Toshiba did not provide it with rubber feet, over time the edges begin to wear off, spoiling the appearance. In general, the hard drive looks minimalistic and restrained, but never boring. Just as important, it is built solidly like a tank.
The key is speed.
Inside the protective casing is a laptop hard drive of its own production with a volume of 2 TB. What's nice, in the disk tests, the performance was quite high: in the Crystaldiskmark benchmark, the sequential read speed was 142 MB / s, and the write speed was 136 MB / s. Given the affordable price, these are excellent speed indicators. However, you still have to pay for the price tag: in the package with Canvio Basics New there are no additional utilities at all to simplify backups and other delights. Unlike other manufacturers, Toshiba saved them for more expensive models like the Canvio Alu.
