A high-performance M.2 solid-state drive aimed at the mass market. It is part of the updated line of high-speed WD Black hard drives based on the updated Innogrit IG5220 platform, which intelligently uses technical solutions in both the low-cost and the elite class. In particular, we are talking about the use of a quad-channel controller with support for HMB technology, which has replaced expensive SDRAM buffer memory.
Within its family, the model belongs to older solutions, but in general it can be attributed to the middle price segment. It is positioned as the optimal solution for modern gaming PCs and laptops that support the NVMe interface and the PCI-E 4.0 data bus. According to the manufacturer, the new platform provides an optimal balance between the final cost, reliability of the drive and the speed of its operation.
The press release talks about a 40% increase in performance and a 20% improvement in energy efficiency up to 20% over the previous generation of WD Black drives. The WD SN770 model range includes 250 GB, 500 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB options. The 1TB version is the fastest, with read throughput of 5150MB/s and write throughput of 4900MB/s. A high level of reliability is confirmed by a 5-year official warranty and a decent guaranteed write resource (TBW) of 600 TB. The proprietary WD Dashboard utility that comes with the drive for monitoring temperature and health, copying and backing up data, archiving and backup.

The disk itself is ok, speed and so on, but for some reason the WD engineers made a nonsense that is incomprehensible to me, there are three chips on the disk that should be evenly adjacent to the radiator, one at the back and two at the front, and so they are made at different heights, the one at the back higher than those in the front and those in the front also differ from each other by about 0.3mm and it turns out that when you put a thermal pad, the lowest chip gets the worst contact with the radiator and will be the hottest. And as a result, in the program you will see two sensors at 30C and one at 49C (this is with a radiator without it, everything is +10 - 13 degrees). I partially solved the problem by cutting a piece of the gasket and putting it under the lowest chip, the temperatures dropped everywhere, but the difference between one and the other two is still always +18-20 degrees. But you just had to make everything the same height and there would be no problems... by the way, I have other SSDs on board and only with WD is this nonsense. speed Temperature ![]() |
I have been using the WD Black SN770 SSD with 500 GB for a little less than two years. In my opinion, it's a great choice in terms of both price and speed. I got it due to problems with installing Windows on a hard drive that's already 12 years old. But of course, if you're building a system from scratch, it's better to go for a terabyte. Additionally, I wanted the SSD to be the fourth version of PCIe. The speeds of the fifth version are simply not supported on my platform, and the price of such SSDs doesn't suit me personally. Regarding temperature, everything is within normal limits. In the computer, it was under the motherboard's heatsink, but I had to move it to a laptop, where a copper cooling heatsink plate would have been helpful to reduce a few degrees, but it wasn't included in the package, even though it's clearly shown in the product photos in some stores. Innovative technology platform
The SN770 M.2 SSD from the WD Black Series combines compactness and advanced technology, making it an excellent choice for both gaming and professional use. A special feature of the model is 112-layer BiCS5 memory and an innovative 4-channel controller without an SDRAM buffer, which uses Host Memory Buffer technology to optimize work with system memory.
Significant Improvements in Every Aspect
WD's winter event focused on increasing speed and reliability over previous generations. The terabyte version of the SN770 achieves read speeds of up to 5,150 MB/s and write speeds of 4,900 MB/s, significantly surpassing the performance of the 2020-2021 models, which were slower, hotter, and consumed more power.
Efficient and Reliable SSD on PCI-E 4.0
WD has created a highly efficient and affordable SSD that runs smoothly without overheating even without an additional heatsink, making the most of PCI-E 4.0. This model is highly compatible and has no obvious weaknesses. Advertising promises of faster performance are true this time around, and despite naysayers' concerns, bufferless controllers don't cause the performance degradation under varying loads that the SN770 exhibits.
