Excellent glass. Anyone who criticizes it hasn't used it or doesn't understand how and why to use it. In terms of sharpness on a crop sensor, only the Canon 60mm macro beats it. For a while, I used it with the 17-40mm L-series (which I later sold), and in terms of sharpness, the Canon 24-105mm is far behind both of these lenses (or perhaps I came across defective ones out of the five I tested). The 15-85mm is an excellent travel zoom! Sharpness, image quality, range of focal lengths! BUT!!! For portrait shooting, I use fast primes or the 70-200mm 2.8 with stabilization. not included lens hood don't like that when zooming the "barrel" extends forward ![]() |
Overall, it's a good lens; one might even say excellent. However, I wouldn't call it excellent due to the variable aperture during zoom, which makes it darker indoors. It's more suited for outdoor use, but can still be used indoors provided you use the flash wisely, as it's not easy to quickly adjust with the changing aperture. It looks solid, which, of course, isn't the most important factor, but it does matter when working with people. The sharpness is good, with a precise and accurate autofocus. Colors are also good. Reviews mention that at 15, it distorts the edges - but what do you expect from a wide-angle lens? It's understandable that the wider the angle, the more distortion you get. I don't even pay attention to it, and in some cases, the distortion even adds a unique look to the photo (but not for people). If you don't want distortion, frame your shot with extra space around the edges and crop the distorted edges later in the editor. You shouldn't demand something unreasonable from a lens given its specifications. Construction-wise, it's quite reliable, but the barrel does extend when carried facing down. Personally, it doesn't bother me as I often support the lens with my hand in a horizontal position. I immediately purchased a hood and a protective filter. I bought it a long time ago, roughly about 5 years ago, so I consider my review objective. During this time, everything works, it's dust-free, possibly because I handle it carefully, and if it rains, I either shoot under an umbrella or cover it with a bag. Overall, I'm satisfied, but there are some downsides, which I'll reiterate below... + Reliable construction, nothing has broken during operation. Knock on wood...))+ Good accurate autofocus, rarely misses.+ Versatile focal lengths, suitable for many tasks and conditions.+ Can shoot at a wide angle in small spaces.+ Stabilizer. But to be honest, for some reason I don’t use it. I should probably try it, as it might help in low light conditions with long exposures.+ If necessary, you can adjust the focus with the focus ring without switching to manual focus mode. I don't know how to properly say if these are drawbacks or just features, considering the capabilities and price. I'll write what is there.- The main downside is the variable aperture. This often interferes with quickly taking a repeat shot with zoom; the photo instantly becomes darker, requiring adjustments for the different aperture, which decreases responsiveness and results in a poorer, darker shot when there's no time to redo. - The second downside is also related to the first one. Again, it's about the inconsistent aperture! It's one thing if you only need to change settings, but with zoom, the minimum aperture becomes 5.6, reducing the chance to take a photo without a flash even in moderately lit rooms. Raising the ISO will add unnecessary noise, increasing the shutter speed will blur moving objects. You were just shooting at 3.5 - manageable, but abruptly zoom to 5.6 and it gets dark. You constantly have to work with exposure and flash, which is extra stress, and you recall lenses with a constant aperture and brighter ones. But the price will be significantly higher, so these lens features and their prices must be considered right away. use Canon 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 EF-S IS USM more than year |
The lens is often compared to Canon's L-series lenses, as it rivals the premium segment in terms of optical performance and level of sharpness.
Replacement
The Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM is one of the best models among the Japanese manufacturer's diverse fleet of lenses designed for APS-C format DSLRs. To a large extent, this is facilitated by the versatility of the lens — the focal length range of 15-85 mm (24-136 mm in 35 mm equivalent) covers all the basic needs of amateur photographers. It will be a great option to replace the kit Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II, as at the wide end the lens captures 10° more into the frame, and at the long end it gives an additional 30mm of focal length, which will be useful for shooting portraits or not very distant objects.
sharpness
In terms of sharpness, the lens is very good throughout the focal length range, but its level can drop slightly at the edges of the picture when shooting at the longest end. For portraits, this is not critical at all, but such a state of affairs can spoil the landscape. However, landscapes at a focal length of 85 mm are shot infrequently.
Scheme
The optical scheme of the lens includes 17 elements in 12 groups. At the same time, three elements are aspherical (reduce distortion), and one more is low-dispersion (to combat chromatic aberrations). There is no internal focus, so when zooming out of the front edge, a rather big “trunk” will come out.
filming
Despite the completely non-portrait aperture values, the lens does a good job of blurring the background, while drawing beautiful bokeh. And in shooting landscapes, architecture and any other everyday scenes, it’s completely difficult for her to find any alternative.
