Under Canon's new line of mirrorless full-frames, the Canon RF 28-70mm f/2L USM looks much more interesting — albeit with a truncated focal length at the short end, but with a maximum aperture of f/2 throughout the zoom range.

The lens is assigned to the Luxury league. Its premium roots give out a red ring around the front lens and an L symbol in the markings. The dust- and moisture-resistant body of the model carries on board a complex optical design (19 elements under the wing of 13 groups), a silent USM autofocus drive and a 9-blade aperture for rendering truly fabulous bokeh.

Traits

The most important feature of the lens character is the ringing sharpness of the image from the working f / 2 aperture. And yes, this is exactly a step higher aperture than the common “universal” 24-70mm f / 2.8. In the world of full-frame optics, there is only one lens that is close in spirit to the model — Sigma 24-35mm f / 2 DG HSM Art with a much smaller coverage of focal lengths.

The one and only

The gigantic "carcass" of the model strives to shift the centre of gravity of the camera in its direction. It's no joke, the weight of the lens has exceeded the mark of 1.4 kg. Another complaint against him is a pronounced barrel-shaped distortion at a wide angle (easily corrected in a photo editor). Well, the "station wagon" costs fabulous money — more expensive than the Canon EOS R full-frame mirrorless mirror itself. Despite everything, this is the only lens with such a high constant aperture from the optics detachment for any shooting conditions.
