Popular budget power supply
When choosing a power supply, it is important to understand that inexpensive models are an age-old story about compromises and savings. And ideal options for $40 simply do not exist in nature. Chieftec Smart A8 GPS-450A8 is no exception.
450 W at 80% efficiency
The 12 V line is divided into two virtual ones - the current on one of them can reach 21 A (which corresponds to a power of 252 W), on the other - 18 A (216 W). In total, up to 360 W can be supplied through two lines, which is 80% of the total power of the unit. However, under heavy loads, power consumption increases and the actual efficiency drops to 70% or even lower. In fact, the sticker on the box “80+ 230V Only” directly says that the promised efficiency is valid up to the specified one, and then how lucky. Therefore, be especially careful when choosing components back to back. This is 100% the case when it is better to overpay a little and take power with a reserve. On the other hand, during the tests, the condition of the output power lines +12 V, +5 V and +3.3 V remained quite good: no large voltage drops or ripples were observed.
Availability of EMI filter and power factor correction module
There is a separate eight-pin (6+2-pin) connector for connecting a video card. As you can see, some 450-watt models lack this. Another plus is the presence of an input EMI filter and an active power factor correction module. But the stabilizer did not impress, which is why it was not always possible to get the promised 360 W via the 12 V line. As for the minuses, the most common complaint online is about acoustic comfort. For some, it beeps noticeably even under moderate loads; for others, an electrical crackling sound is heard at the junction of the unit itself and the power cable.
