Take a look at the table with characteristics of screwdrivers to quickly and objectively compare the five devices we selected for this article. You can select a tool to suit your taste using the catalog of cordless drills and screwdrivers, which contains almost all the models currently on sale in online stores.

Two chucks (quick-release and for a bit), quick chuck replacement, light weight, case, two batteries included.
Weak backlight.

Many installation and assembly jobs require a tool that can both drill and tighten fasteners. For such situations, the Metabo PowerMaxx BS Quick Basic screwdriver is perfect. It has two chucks at once: one is a quick-release chuck (with sliding jaws that can hold round drills with a diameter of 1 to 10 mm), the second is for a bit (with a hexagonal hole, inside of which there is a magnet for securely fixing the bits). Thanks to the Metabo Quick quick-change mechanism, the process of replacing the cartridge takes just a couple of seconds and does not require the use of auxiliary tools. The same mechanism allows you to use other useful attachments (for example, angular or eccentric), which can be purchased separately.

This screwdriver is a very compact and very lightweight tool. With a standard battery, it weighs only 1.05 kg. Despite its miniature size, it has decent torque (up to 34 Nm, depending on the position of the force adjustment clutch) and a two-speed gearbox (360/1400 rpm) with metal gears. Due to these characteristics, Metabo PowerMaxx BS Quick Basic can be used for drilling holes in wood (up to 18 mm in diameter) and metal (up to 10 mm), as well as tightening medium-sized screws and self-tapping screws. For precise adjustment to different materials, the tool is equipped with a sensitive start button, with which you can control the rotation speed of the chuck. And for working in low light conditions, the screwdriver has a built-in backlight (however, it is very weak, and you shouldn’t rely on it too much).

Drill drivers such as the Metabo PowerMaxx BS Quick Basic are good assistants for professionals who do electrical installations (such as installing sockets or assembling switchboards), assembling and installing furniture, producing small structures from wood or metal, and other similar tasks. Efficient operation is facilitated by the fact that the tool comes with two batteries, each with a capacity of 2 Ah. And a durable and spacious plastic case, which is also included in the kit, solves the issue of storing and transporting the tool along with all the accessories, accessories and replaceable attachments necessary for work.

Like many other representatives of the latest generations of power tools, the Bosch GSR 12V-30 Professional screwdriver is equipped with a brushless motor, which has many advantages. Motors of this type are characterized by reduced energy consumption, durability and reliability (despite the technical complexity). Another advantage is its small size (for example, this screwdriver’s body is 9 mm shorter than its “predecessor” Bosch GSR 120-LI Professional, which has similar characteristics). Thanks to its compact size, this tool is perfect for working in hard-to-reach places and limited space. And the low weight (only 900 g including battery) allows you to work longer without stopping, without feeling tired in your hands.

A decent torque (30 Nm) allows you to screw screws with a diameter of up to 8 mm into wood. To work with smaller screws, the tool is equipped with a 20-position clutch that regulates the tightening force. A very sensitive start key allows you to precisely control the rotation speed of the chuck from zero to maximum (400 rpm at the first speed and 1600 rpm at the second). At the same time, we note that even at low speed the tool perfectly “maintains” the torque at the level set using the rotary ring (screwdrivers with conventional brush motors cannot do this; when the load increases, their speed drops to almost zero).

The Bosch GSR 12V-30 Professional drill/driver is a convenient and practical tool for craftsmen involved in installation and assembly work. The optimal areas for its application are furniture production, electrical installation and other tasks that require a good and durable small-sized screwdriver. In this configuration, the tool comes with two batteries (2 Ah capacity), a charger and a plastic case, in which, in addition to the screwdriver and batteries, there is space for storing drilling equipment, bits and other small accessories.

Visually, the Stanley FatMax SFMCD710D2K is not particularly different from many other cordless drills and drivers. It has the same pistol design, "classic" layout and standard appearance. But, taking a closer look, on the rear end of the case you can see the inscription Brushless, which means that a modern brushless motor is hidden “under the hood”. Electric motors of this type are characterized by increased reliability, reduced energy consumption and improved performance compared to traditional brushed motors. It is thanks to the brushless motor that this tool has increased torque (60 Nm - this is a very decent torque value for drill-drivers), which allows you to work with fairly large self-tapping screws and quickly tighten long screws into dense wood. The tightening force can be adjusted using a rotary ring with 15 positions. The torque adjustment coupling is sized so that it is convenient to work even with gloves on, without losing the settings when changing accessories in the chuck.

Since the Stanley FatMax SFMCD710D2K is a drill-driver, the tool is equipped with a two-speed gearbox. The first speed (up to 600 rpm) is intended for working with fasteners, and the second (up to 1900 rpm) is for drilling. The jaws of the keyless chuck can hold cylindrical drill bits (with shank diameters from 1.5 to 13 mm) or hex bits. The screwdriver has enough power to make holes up to 30 mm in diameter in wood (up to 13 mm in steel).

In recent decades, it was generally accepted that the Stanley brand had finally switched to the production of household level tools. But the Fatmax line, which appeared a couple of years ago, says the opposite. In terms of technical characteristics, quality and reliability, the tools of this series are not inferior to the products of those brands whose products are generally considered “professional” by default. This is indirectly evidenced by the good reputation of Stanley FatMax series power tools and a long warranty (3 years, subject to registration on the manufacturer’s website). An additional argument in favor of the Stanley FatMax SFMCD710D2K is the inclusion of a plastic case for storing and carrying the screwdriver with accessories, as well as two rechargeable batteries (each with a capacity of 2 Ah).

Among many other professional drill-drivers, the Makita DHP453RFX8 stands out because this tool has an impact mechanism. Thanks to its presence, you can make holes not only in wood (up to 36 mm in diameter) or steel (up to 13 mm), but also in denser materials, such as brickwork or concrete (up to 13 mm). But the scope of application of this device is not limited to drilling. Due to the presence of two speeds (400/1300 rpm) and good torque (42 Nm at the last of 16 clutch positions), it also does an excellent job of tightening and unscrewing medium-sized screws and self-tapping screws (up to 6x75 mm).

The Makita DHP453RFX8 design has been tested by time and experience. It traces its “pedigree” to the Makita BHP453 model, which went on sale back in 2008. The screwdriver has a very reliable motor (with a reputation as an almost “indestructible” motor) and a durable metal gearbox (the plastic “glass” should not be misleading - all parts that transmit torque or provide impact are made of high-quality steel). Thanks to the wide distribution of this screwdriver, it is easy to get any parts for it: even the entire motor assembled, even the smallest gears of the gearbox individually.

The Makita DHP453RFX8 drill/driver is perfect for working in factories and construction sites. The presence of an impact mode also allows you to use this tool for tasks related to drilling brick and concrete (for example, for installing windows and door frames or installing brackets for cable routes, pipelines, etc.). But it should be noted that the screwdriver cannot be called compact (its body length is 232 mm), so it is unlikely to be well suited for working in hard-to-reach places and confined spaces. Minor shortcomings also include the lack of backlight. However, this small drawback is unlikely to put off craftsmen who want to buy a good professional screwdriver for everyday work.

One of the key components in the design of the DeWALT DCD777M2T is the brushless motor. It provides greater power (340 W output) and increased (by the standards of this class of power tools) torque - as much as 65 Nm, which is enough to drill large holes in wood (up to ⌀30 mm) or twist screws with a diameter of up to 7 - 8 mm . To reduce the tightening force (for example, when working with small screws or when tightening fasteners into relatively soft wood, such as pine or aspen), a mechanical torque control clutch with 15 steps is used. When working with fasteners, the first speed of the gearbox is used (up to 500 rpm), and in drilling mode - the second (up to 1750 rpm). The tool is equipped with a quick-release chuck, into which you can insert round drills (with shanks with a diameter of 1.5 - 13 mm) or hex bits of all types and sizes. An LED is built into the screwdriver body under the chuck to illuminate the work area during operation. The backlight has an afterglow function (the LED lights up for several seconds after the button is released), so it can be used as a kind of flashlight that allows you to “take aim” in advance or evaluate the results of your work.

DeWALT cordless drills/drivers are great for professional use. In particular, the DeWALT DCD777M2T is actively used by craftsmen who are involved in the construction of wooden and metal structures, installation of fences and roofs, furniture assembly and electrical work, as well as any other operations where they have to drill a lot of holes or tighten a large number of fasteners. In addition to power and high torque, the intensive use of this screwdriver is facilitated by the fact that it comes complete with two fairly capacious batteries (4 Ah each): while one is being used for work, the second is being charged. The kit also includes a charger (fully charges the battery in 1 hour 40 minutes) and a high-quality plastic case, which contains the tool with all the accessories and equipment necessary for the master during the working day.
