It would hardly be wrong to say that the Baofeng UV-5R walkie-talkie is the best-selling radio in the world (in the civil communications niche), and this is the most impressive (and deserved) characteristic of the device. For its comparatively low price, the functionality of the walkie-talkie is simply off the charts - lots of modes and various wow-perks. The keyboard block with direct access to the frequency synthesizer and to forty-one menu items turns the walkie-talkie into an engaging Rubik's cube that can be enthusiastically fiddled with for days in search of perfection. As for the technical specifications, there is no particular sense in listing them; it can only be noted that they will satisfy the diverse needs of the vast majority of users, ranging from novice enthusiasts to serious comrades. There are no real drawbacks. On minor points: - inconsistent frequency grid set by the manufacturer, randomly connected subtones and other nonsense. After purchase, settings need to be reset and made reasonable, requiring some experience; - factory setting of squelch levels is non-linear, reprogramming is possible only with a computer; - no water resistance, including the antenna socket, which instantly lets in rainwater running down the antenna. - it's advisable to thoroughly check everything at purchase, as they say, without leaving the checkout, and to avoid buying from little-known retailers and small irresponsible sellers.
