Below we have selected the most interesting tricks that the "corporation of good" taught the new OS.

Adaptive Battery

Android P will treat the battery like Sam and Frodo treat their elf bread in The Lord of the Rings. That is, use as little as possible and only when necessary. Thanks to the introduction of DeepMind AI into the system, Adaptive Battery will learn to analyze the system requirements of installed applications. And then compare them with how often you use them, and rationally redistribute energy.

This way, the apps you need will get the right system resources, and the apps in the “when did I install this?” category. belts will have to be tightened. According to Google, this will save up to 30% of the charge of the smartphone.

App Actions

In the last version of Android, Google tried to integrate installed applications deeper into the system. In Android P, this integration was divided into two types and reached a new level. The first one is called Actions. Thanks to them, you can use the functions of applications directly from the desktop without opening the application itself. For example, hold down the Gmail icon and in the drop-down menu immediately go to writing a letter.

The second function is called Slices and does the same thing but with an Android search menu. That is, if you enter the name of your favorite group in the search bar, the system can immediately open its discography on Google Play or Apple Music. Thanks to AI, these features will learn to predict your actions. For example, not just create a new letter, but write to an accountant, since on Friday afternoon you usually send reports to him.

Digital health

Digital Health is an experimental feature that counts time spent on individual apps and the smartphone as a whole. Google believes that this will help people better understand how much they depend on their gadgets and how much time they spend on Instagram/Facebook/Reddit.

"Digital Health" can be turned into a radical mode and set a daily limit for individual applications. If you allocate a conditional 30 minutes a day on YouTube or Facebook, then after this time the system will block this application, and its icon will become gray and inactive. Something similar was done by parents in the 90s, when they hid joysticks and power supplies from Dendy and Sega. In our time, when scientists are sounding the alarm, warning about the dangers of digital addiction, this can be a useful thing for developing self-control.

New multitasking screen

In Android P, Google has rethought the multitasking screen a bit. First of all, this did not affect his appearance, but his skills. Thanks to the introduction of AI, the system will collect the user's habits and try to predict which programs he will want to open next. Theoretically, it sounds like this - if you are going for a run in the morning and launch RunKeeper, then the next application in line will be a player with a playlist for running.

This makes the application windows on the multitasking screen interactive. That is, you can switch the song in the player or copy the desired piece of text without opening the application itself.

bangs/unibrow support

After the release of Apple iPhone X 64 GB everyone went off the rails and started making smartphones with problematic notches. Problematic because Android did not support this cutout at the system level, which is why the picture in movies, games and applications was not very nicely trimmed around the edges. And although at the official presentation, Google representatives did not say anything about bangs / unibrows, in early August, the company sent out fairly clear instructions to developers regarding it.

Google strongly recommends not to make more than two “bangs” on a smartphone. Only above, and only below. Not on the side, or at an angle so they don't obscure important interface elements. Separately, they asked us not to forget about fashionable screens with 18:9 proportions - an perfect application, according to the precepts of Google, should adapt to any display. We are waiting for more specifics about the support of the bangs with the release of new beta versions of Android P.

And now something else

Naturally, these are not all the innovations of Android P, but the most noticeable of them. Among other updates, it is worth noting an updated gesture control system, support for dual cameras, a notification panel that has learned to work directly with applications, a brutal do not disturb mode, an updated screenshot editor and a prettier Material Design.

Which smartphones will update to Android P and when it will happen

The latest version of Google's mobile OS was released on August 7 and immediately appeared on the Pixel and Essential Phone. Next in line are smartphones from the Android One programme, which should be updated everywhere before the end of the month. First of all, this concerns devices of the Nokia brand, which is actively promoting the “pure Android” programme.

Huawei on August 6 launched the Android P beta test on the flagship Huawei Mate 10 Pro, Huawei P20, Honor 10 and Honor V10 models. According to Huawei representatives, developers are trying to optimize the new version for their devices as much as possible and release mass updates in late August - early September.

Xiaomi is already testing a new firmware for Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S, but the terms of the update and the models that will receive it have not yet been announced.

Sony plans to release all updates between September and November. They promise to update the Xperia XZ2, Xperia XZ2 Compact, Xperia XZ2 Premium, Xperia XZ1, Xperia XZ1 Compact and Xperia XZ Premium models.

Representatives of LG and Samsung have not yet said anything about which smartphones will be updated and when. Both companies are actively developing their own shells, so updating to a new version of Android takes them more time.
