NEVER, do NOT take this model. In May 2017, I purchased this router (3-year warranty), everything was great, and then exactly 2 years later (May 2019), the processor started to die. It was replaced under warranty, which of course reset it, and then again, a month ago, the same problem occurred (in the end, I got a refund). I don't know if they gathered sand from the beaches of Kyiv for the chips or what the problem could be, I have no idea. The point is, the Wi-Fi speed gradually decreases, varying among different devices, and a less observant user might not even notice this. However, on some of my weaker devices, the speed dropped below 1Mbps (while on some devices, it remained in the range of 200Mbps). If you change the Wi-Fi settings, the speed restores but the next day - the same situation. Moreover, beyond this problem, I had to assist the "specialists" from the official service center KROK TTC in identifying this issue, which took them a month. Before this router, I used MikroTik hap ac lite, Linksys EA2700, and dlink DIR300, and believe it or not, all these routers are still operational and served for 6, 8, and 10+ years, respectively. Now I'm looking towards Zyxel or MikroTik because they have a VPN client out of the box. The presence of a VPN client, which is very useful in Ukraine. Gaming router
In addition to a bunch of gaming products, Asus decided to separate gaming routers into a separate category. Asus RT-AC88U became the first sign in the manufacturer's line. Immediately striking is the aggressive sports car-like design with sharp, chopped lines, ornate grille and traditional red and black paintwork.
Low ping
But not with a single appearance, the set of skills of the router is also quite unusual. Firstly, Asus RT-AC88U owners get free access to the WTFast GPN service. It helps to optimize the path of game packets between the game server and the computer, thereby reducing ping. Secondly, in the router settings, you can enable the ASUS AQS service, which allows you to quickly prioritize traffic for games. For example, in the "Gamer Solo" mode, online games receive the entire strip, and background processes such as OS updates or antivirus work are stopped for the duration of the game. In online shooters where every millisecond matters, little things like this can save a life.
Works in mesh networks
The router also boasts four antennas in the 4T4R configuration (four for transmitting, four for receiving) and support for ASUS AiRadar technology, which allows you to focus the signal in the direction of the desired device for better communication in a busy network. The icing on the cake is support for the relatively new ASUS AirMesh technology, which allows you to combine several routers into one decentralized Mesh network.
Outrageous speed
Well, otherwise Asus RT-AC88U leaves behind most modern routers. For example, in the 5 GHz band, it boasts a data transfer rate of up to 2167 Mbps and up to 1000 Mbps in the 2.4 GHz band. Compare this to the 867/400 Mbps that advanced AC1300 class routers deliver. In terms of connection, we have a pair of USB ports (one 3.0 and one 2.0) for connecting wireless modems, printers or network drives and eight gigabit RJ45 ports for wired connection of computers, Smart TVs, multimedia set-top boxes or other devices.
Well, traditionally for gaming devices, the main disadvantage of the Asus RT-AC88U is its biting price. Well, it takes a long time to load (about a minute and a half), although who cares if you turn it on and off at most once a year or two?
