TP-LINK TL-WR840N
![]() |
One of the most popular models of wireless routers in the TP-LINK range. Despite the fact that this device entered the market at the end of 2015, it remains relevant, and the firmware updates released during this time have eliminated numerous software weaknesses. This model supports full duplex 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi connections and operates in the 2.4 GHz frequency band. Thus, the TP-LINK TL-WR840N wireless router provides compatibility with almost any wireless device available today, including smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, multimedia set-top boxes, TVs, printers, cameras, etc.
The data transfer rate that it can ensure when communicating with full-duplex 802.11b / g / n devices reaches 300 Mbps. To ensure stable operation in the air, which is noisy by neighboring Wi-Fi devices, there is CCA technology that allows the device to correctly select a channel free from interference. WDS, IGMP Proxy, bridge mode 802.1Q tag vlan technologies are also supported to support IP TV broadcasting. In addition, the device is equipped with 4 Fast Ethernet LAN ports (up to 100 Mbps) for organizing a wired network.

A simple and affordable router, without any unnecessary features, performs its intended task well. Distributes up to 100 Mbps to 4-5 devices without complaints. Evenly allocates the load. Easy to connect. Easy and quick to set up (for this, it's important to remember your settings). It may occasionally disconnect, but that can also depend on the provider, and over a long period of use, it has worked in several different locations. + Simple, reliable, easy to "restart" - the brightness of the materials and the glossy surface on the white color can be seen from any segment :) ![]() |
I've been using it for 4 months, and overall, there are no complaints. It falls into the category of "set it and forget it." Smartphones and new laptops work great, speed is high even through 2 panel walls, the signal is stable. A problem arose with an old laptop (from 2010) - the network often disappears, disconnects. Most likely, it's the laptop's weak adapter (everything is fine with other routers), and this can be quite an unpleasant surprise. There's another issue, but it's very specific. If an ASUS UX series laptop is connected to this router's network, and a Bluetooth audio device is connected to the laptop, the TP-LINK TL-WR840N Wi-Fi network drops. The only solution is to reboot the router and disable the Bluetooth adapter on the laptop. The TP-LINK service center said they are aware of the issue, but they don't know how to fix it. This also happens with other routers from this company, both old and new. It's quite regrettable since this issue has been known since 2013. I've mentioned two problems, one strange and the second even stranger. But I'm quite sure that other users might not need to reboot the router even after a couple of years of use. Overall, the router is good, even very good, but it's TP-Link. 1. Good speed 2. Stable performance (if you don't have ASUS UX with a connected Bluetooth device) 3. Strong signal 4. Easy setup Like most TP-Link products, unexpected and hard-to-explain problems may occur ![]() |
Do not believe in a marketing inscription up to 300Mbps over the air. Giving away more than you receive is unrealistic. The phone right next to the router has a speed of 50 Mbps, in the kitchen the mobile Internet catches even better (6 meters through two panel walls) price I didn’t see any special shortcomings, sometimes the connection over the air disappears, everything is stable over the wire |
Truly stylish products in the category of wireless routers of the low-cost segment can be counted on the fingers of, if not one, then both hands. One of these is a router named TL-WR840N from TP-LINK.
Glossy UFO
The model is “built” in a “body” of white glossy plastic, on which dust and fingerprints are not particularly visible. In shape, it vaguely resembles a kind of flying saucer with two protruding non-removable antennas. Between the bases of the "horns" from the rear, physical connection interfaces lined up in a harmonious row : a 100-megabit WAN port and a quartet of LAN ports with a similar data transfer rate.
Ways to "park"
The fulcrum for the router in the desktop “parking” method is plastic legs without a rubberized coating, which is why the device sometimes slides on a table or cabinet. You can attach it "tightly" to the wall — the holes for this case are placed on the rear perforated panel of the router. The indicators on the "facade" of the TP-LINK TL-WR840N show the status of the system, the Wi-Fi module, LAN and WAN connections, as well as the operation of the WPS protocol.
Stable connection
The router distributes the Internet "over the air" in only one frequency band of 2.4 GHz. In the line-of-sight zone, customers receive a consistently high quality Internet connection at a “flight” speed close to the maximum claimed “according to the passport”. Breaking through two panel walls, the speed sags by about half. To ensure stable operation, the router was “brought up” with support for CCA technology, which allows you to select a channel free from noise. The TP-LINK TL-WR840N is the best fit for a small studio apartment with one or two permanent residents. With a minimum low-cost, there is practically no better option than the model in question.
