The Taiwanese giant Gigabyte has long and firmly occupied an important role in the market of motherboards and video cards, but not power supplies. Released in 2020, the Gigabyte P-Series 2020 model shattered this stereotype, showing that Gigabyte employs jack-of-all-trades.

The P-Series 2020 is a modern modular power supply at the junction of different price categories, which Gigabyte released after the successful launch of the Aorus series PSU. For its characteristics, the P-Series does not cost much, has 90% efficiency and, in general, is one of the most affordable options with a power reserve of 750 watts, an 80+ Gold certificate and Japanese capacitors under the hood. Such a set of characteristics makes it a dangerous competitor for popular power suppliesChieftec Proton and Be quiet System Power 9.

The beauty of this model lies in thoughtful economy. Gigabyte has correctly prioritized using Japanese electrolytes, Japanese capacitors and reliable solid-state solutions. As a result, high quality output voltage combined with low ripple, minimal drawdowns and generally stable operation. According to the main 12-volt line, the P-Series 2020 is capable of producing 732 watts, that is, 99.7% of the nominal value. Plus, the turntable on a hydraulic bearing works quieter than a conventional bushing and is likely to last longer.

Chieftec Proton is an excellent mid―level modular power supply for those who do not want to overpay for models with a Gold certificate or buy a pig in a poke. The list of its advantages includes modern circuitry based on DC-DC converters, good efficiency (85%, 80 PLUS Bronze certificate), powerful main line +12V (100% of nominal value) and the entire range of protective measures (SIP, UVP, OCP, OTP, AFC). Proton has much more to do with the company's flagship models than with economy-class power supplies, which explains the popularity of this model.

Given the power reserve of 750 watts, decent efficiency and incoming line performance, this variation of Chieftec Proton will adequately cope with the role of the foundation in a powerful gaming PC with an 8-core processor and a powerful new generation graphics card like RTX 3080. At least in tests, it showed itself to be a solid five, not particularly suffering from drawdowns and ripples on the input lines, even at peak loads.

In semi-passive mode, with a low load on the Chieftec Proton system, it works very quietly. When the load increases to 250 watts, the rustling of the cooler blades becomes audible. Over 300 watts, a small but distinct hum appears. It does not interfere, and does not annoy, but it is there. Otherwise, it is a strong mid-level model without unnecessary bells and whistles. Perfect for those who get a powerful and reliable modular power supply without overpayments.

The Chinese brand DeepCool entered the market of power supplies only in 2014, but it is impossible to call it a beginner. The first models of the company immediately attracted attention due to the use of the chassis from Channel Well Technology, after which DeepCool began to systematically rock the near-low-cost segment with its folk hits Aurora and Nova. This time, a novelty of 2020 came to our test ― a modular 750W power supply unit from the "golden" DQ-M-V2L series.

In terms of circuitry and functionality, we have an excellent middle-class unit that combines many successful engineering solutions, Japanese capacitors and DC-DC converters. The advantages of the model include an 80+ Gold certificate, a high load capacity of the +12V channel (almost 100% of the nominal value), high-quality electronics and an official 10-year warranty. Potentially, this is a solid foundation for an optimal gaming build with an RTX 3060 or higher graphics card.

It is also worth noting the long stock cables and loops that can be disconnected if necessary (according to the passport, this is a modular PSU), a successful set of available connectors and the delivery package. Only the turntable turned out to be ambiguous. Up to a load of 600 watts, it does not give reasons to remember about yourself, but as soon as you cross the rubicon, acoustic comfort significantly decreases. Apparently, it's about using a fan on a sliding bearing. However, such cooling systems are used by many other solutions of this class, because truly silent power supplies with a Gold Plus certificate are 2-3 times more expensive.

Corsair RMx Series is a popular 750―watt near-ground power supply unit built on a foundation with Japanese capacitors, separate stabilization, and LLC/DC-DC converters. Thanks to high-quality electronics and competent design, it has excellent energy efficiency and high efficiency, which is confirmed by an 80+ Gold certificate.

It will become a reliable basis for a powerful workstation or a serious gaming machine with an 8-core processor and a GeForce RTX 3070 graphics card. RMx Series provides excellent stabilization of output voltages, is able to give the maximum claimed power on the +12V line. Regardless of the power consumption, the main line does not suffer from drawdowns at all, and the ripple level, even in full load mode, is on average 2-3 times lower than normal. Corsair turned out to have such a successful "chassis" that it is used almost unchanged in Corsair RM, RMi and RMx power supplies.

The cooling system deserves special praise. At low loads, cooling works in the background, the turntables practically do not spin, and cooling occurs due to passive convection. At a load above 300 W, the noise of the turntables becomes audible, but the overall level of acoustic comfort is at a high level. Among other advantages, we note the modular nature of this PSU, which simplifies the process of connecting the power supply, the availability of necessary protection measures and an official 10-year warranty from the manufacturer.

The Focus Plus line continues the tradition of "golden" Seasonic power supplies built on its own OEM platforms, offering flagship modular models with 80 Plus Gold certificate, high-quality element base and a number of interesting technical chips. In fact, these are some of the best power supplies in the category up to $ 150, which, according to the totality of performance characteristics, closely approaches platinum models likeSeasonic PRIME Platinum.

According to the Sea Sonic Focus Plus Gold passport, it is a modular power supply unit with a maximum power of 750 watts, an impressive efficiency of around 90% and a quality certificate of 80+ Gold. If we disassemble the case, then inside we will see almost all the know-how of modern power supplies, including DC converters with separate stabilization, Japanese capacitors, massive radiators on hot circuits and a 12-volt line with serious input indicators. And all this stuff is exclusively of its own design, the good thing is that Seasonic is one of the innovators in this market and they always have something to offer.

For example, the same cooler on the FDB hydrodynamic bearing is used here, which we saw in the company's "platinum" power supplies. This is a really quiet cooling system that does not violate the acoustic comfort of the user even at loads under 90 – 95%. In passive mode, it doesn't make a sound at all. If the automation for some reason does not suit the user, he is free to change the operating modes of the turntables using a small button on the back panel. Add to this list an official 10-year warranty and get an extremely interesting power supply that casts doubt on the purchase of a model with a platinum certificate.
