The main division of game consoles (console) goes in the direction — desktop and portable.
The main feature of desktop set-top boxes is that they do not have their own screen: they need to be connected to a TV or other external display. The dimensions of such devices are comparable to PCs, and they can even surpass them in terms of gaming capabilities: simultaneous game for several people on one screen, connection of specialized controllers (MS Kinect, PS Move, Wii Remote). Many desktop consoles support HD video, 3D, multi-channel audio (although you need to have the appropriate screens and audio systems to use these features), and some models even allow you to access the Internet.
Many of the latest video games are also available for desktop consoles, and some are exclusively for them. Accordingly, consoles of this type will be appreciated primarily by avid gamers who want to have a specialized device exclusively for advanced games.
Desktop models can come with a different number of controllers, but usually have the ability to connect several at once — both wired and wireless (the latter option will provide freedom of movement). Controllers can also be purchased separately.
Portable set-top boxes are small devices equipped with their own screen. Their main advantage is battery life: the game does not require anything other than the console itself. Such devices will allow you to pass the time on the road, while waiting in line, etc., and at home you can play without occupying the TV (although there are models with a TV connection function). And the most advanced models are actually multifunctional media centers: they have touch displays, built-in cameras, you can watch videos, listen to music and even surf the Internet. The disadvantage of most portable consoles are relatively simple games — 8- and 16-bit. At the same time, there are exceptions (for example, the latest PlayStation Portable models support games for the original desktop PS). Therefore, this type of set-top box can be recommended for those who care about battery life, as well as for “casual” players who play simple games from time to time.
Desktop console games usually need to be purchased on separate media (some games may be included). In portable devices, this applies only to advanced models — the simplest ones come with a pre-installed set of games that cannot be changed.
