There are several main characteristics of spinning rods that you should pay attention to when choosing a model: design, length, casting (range of weights of baits) and build (degree of bending of the spinning). It depends on these parameters in what conditions and for which fish the fishing rod will be used.

Construction

According to the design features , spinning rods are:

  • Whole. This type is characterized by high indicators of balance, sensitivity of the rod (blank) and strength. Great for catching large fish. However, due to the size and inability to fold, such spinning rods are very inconvenient to transport. One-piece devices can most often be found at fishing bases, where they can be rented.

  • Telescopic. Spinning consists of several sections of different diameters, connected in series with each other. This is the most convenient option for transportation, since when folded, it usually does not exceed half a metre. Telescopic models are actively used for catching small and medium-sized predators. When choosing such a rod, pay special attention to the joints of the knees so that there are no backlashes between them in the elongated state.

  • Plug-in.Compared to the telescopic and one-piece, it has a better sensitivity/strength ratio. Usually they consist of two parts, which are disassembled and quite convenient to transport. They are somewhat more expensive in price (much depends on the manufacturer and the quality of execution) of the previous versions, but at the same time they surpass them in ease of use.

The weight of the bait with which the rod is able to work

Casting (test) is a parameter from the minimum to the maximum possible weight of the bait with which the spinning is able to work. If the bait is lighter than the stated casting, then it simply will not be felt with eyeliners, and if it is heavier, it can lead to a breakdown of the device. All spinning rods by casting are classified into:

  • Ultralight (UL) — from 0.5 to 7 gr.
  • Light (L) — from 5 to 10 gr.
  • Medium-light (ML) — from 8 to 15 grams.
  • Medium (M) — from 10 to 30 gr.
  • Medium-heavy (MH) — from 25 to 40 grams.
  • Heavy (H) — from 40 to 100 grams.
  • Superheavy (XH) — over 100 gr.

The first three types are designed for fishing in small reservoirs from the shore overgrown with reeds, or boats. They allow you to fish small fish, for example, perch. Usually, such rods themselves are small in weight, which means that frequent casts will not lead to hand fatigue. However, it is impossible to make long-distance casts with them, so it will no longer be possible to catch large fish at a depth, for example, such as asp.

The most popular among fishermen are medium (M), since they have the most convenient weight "run-up". Small pike, walleye, carp and bream are frequent "customers" of baits that the rod is able to work with.

The last three types are designed for catching large trophy fish, and will be of interest mainly to fishermen participating in various tournaments. It is worth noting that the rods of these "weight" categories are quite heavy and expensive.

Please note that not all manufacturers specify the type of casting, for example, UL, L or another. However, on almost every rod you can find a record of the type "10-30g", which means the upper and lower threshold of the bait weight.

Build

The formation means the shape of the bend of the rod during the casting of the bait. At the same time, depending on the rate of return of the form to its original state, the following structures of rods are distinguished:

  • Slow or "parabolic" (S). "Parabolic" is able to bend 2/3 of the top of the form. Such a system is most often found in heavy long rods designed for long-distance casting, and mainly from a boat. It allows you to fish large fish for a long time, which likes sharp jerks. At the same time, such a flexible rod keeps the fishing line intact, since it does not experience sharp jerks (bending the rod compensates for tension).
  • Medium (M). Bends slightly less than the "parabolic", but at the same time allows you to feel the spinner better when jigging and, accordingly, the fish. The rods of the middle order are the choice of "hunters" for asp, since this fish likes to lead a spinner along the bottom.
  • Medium-fast (MF). Great for twitching, as it allows you to perform high-quality jerky bait eyeliners along the bottom.
  • Fast (F). Only the tip bends here. The rod will be useful in places where you need to make frequent sharp cuts, as well as on rivers with a strong current.
  • Superfast (EF). Practically does not differ from the fast type and is designed for the same tasks. Rods with the F and EF formation are convenient to use in straitened circumstances, for example, in the presence of bushes near the shore.

Length

The choice of the length of the spinning depends largely on the local conditions in which fishing is planned. For example, for long-distance casting, you will need a long rod with a decent casting, but you will be able to perform manipulations only in an open space without nearby trees. Also, it is always more difficult to swing from a boat than from the shore, which means that the spinning form should be taken less. The following are general recommendations for the selection of a spinning rod regarding its length:

  • For casting from a boat or from the shore, where trees are located nearby, take a rod from 1.8 to 2.2 m. If the reservoir is small, then you can take a form of 1.4 – 1.6 m.
  • When fishing on an open shore without trees and shrubs, you can use a rod from 2 to 2.8 m. However, for long-distance casting of heavy baits, it is worth taking spinning from 3 m, since with a larger swing, a longer flight distance is obtained.
  • When fishing from the pier (popular in port cities) with a large crowd of people, it is better to take small high-speed rods.
  • If you plan to fish in "open" water, for example, in the sea, then it is quite possible to use sticks up to 4 metres long.

Spinning for perch

This is the most popular predator, which is found in almost all reservoirs. It is best for beginners to get their hands on catching this particular predator, and then switch to larger ones. Here are the following indicators of gear that is suitable for perch fishing:

  • Rod length up to 2.20 m with medium or fast formation. Casting ranges from 5 to 20 gr.
  • For such a rod, a non–inertia reel with a spool size of 1700 – 2000 and a gear ratio of at least 5.5 rpm (the number of revolutions of the spool per one turn of the handle) is suitable.
  • For most baits, a fishing line less than 0.2 mm thick with a thin leash is suitable.

Spinning for pike

Pike, after hitting the hook, often makes sharp jerks to the side, puts the fishing line on the surface of the water or vice versa rushes to the bottom, so you need to take into account its "character" when choosing gear. Here is a great option for assembling a spinning rod for a pike weighing from 300 grams to 5 kilograms:

  • The rod should be taken from 2.2 to 2.7 m (take into account the size of the reservoir) of an average build with casting from 10 to 30 grams.
  • It is better to take a braided fishing line and without fail with a leash for insurance.

Spinning on walleye

In behavior, the pike perch is very similar to the pike, so in some cases you can use a "pike" set to catch it. But you can also use a highly specialized perch:

  • The form is from 2.0 to 2.8 m in size with casting from 15 to 45 grams. It is best to take a fast one, which bends only the tip.
  • The coil is needed with a spool of about 4000 with a gear ratio of 5.5.
  • It is worth taking a braided fishing line to feel the bites better, because it does not have stretching. unlike nylon fishing line.

Conclusion

For small predators in size and weight, a rod with medium or fast formation and casting from 10 to 30 grams is suitable. For big fish, it is better to take a rod with a slow formation and casting above 50 grams. To cast from the shore overgrown with bushes or boats, take small rods in length.
