Modern look, productivity, USB ports, manual lock, sufficient long-lasting cable. It supplies 12 volts, via a trigger cable it supplies power to a power bank. Price (at the end of 2023).
It’s not so easy to set up a flash drive so you can run it through the USB of your router. ![]() |
Yes, the device works, but I can't recommend this router for purchase, there are too many drawbacks. Perhaps these will be fixed in the future, but it's not a fact. The strong Wi-Fi signal was pleasing. The speed of the external USB3.0 drive showed quite acceptable results compared to the parameters connected to a PC (photo 8). The internet does not work while the phone is connected in modem mode. In the WAN selection settings, I used a USB modem, an Android phone, automatic and forced selection mode, but I still couldn't share the internet. + The Wi-Fi 5 signal strength is several times greater than that of DIR-825/AC/G1 and Keenetic Giga (KN-1011); + The device can be rebooted on a schedule (photo 2); + Sleep mode for the USB drive (photo 2); + Separate access rights can be granted to each user for the USB drive (photo 3); + Direct connection to tech support from the router; + Built-in Speedtest with data logging (photo 7); + A bunch of useful perks with VPN, server/client; + Different icons can be assigned to users or devices, a very large list (photo 4); + Convenient control and management of the router from the outside world via the ASUS Router app through ASUS DDNS without having a public IP (photo 9); + Interesting built-in security system [censored]; + Failure notifications are sent to the ASUS Router mobile app; - The old interface design, which was fashionable back in the days of Windows XP, is okay in the mobile version of the ASUS Router app, but the functionality differs greatly from the web; - The web interface is slow and lags; - It takes a long time to mount a hard drive in the USB3.0 port; - Any change in settings or USB disk parameters requires a wait for application of 13-15 seconds or a reboot around 1 minute; - When adding a static IP to a user after each client, the router restarts and requires password entry; - The usual Transmission is absent, replaced by the clunky Download Master; - Download Master does not work with torrent files (although it's supposed to), only with magnet links; - Usernames in Samba do not allow digits (I wanted to separate Camera1, Camera2); - There's no option to format disks in ext4; - Samba does not properly work with USB flash drives, they work for about 12-24 hours, then freeze completely. Only rebooting helps; - The built-in protection system [censored] and URL filter blocks content only in Chrome, Firefox completely ignores the restrictions and freely browses "restricted" content (photo 6). - ASUS AiCloud does not work with a gray IP, even though the router is accessible via ASUS DDNS; - The internet does not work when a phone is connected in modem mode. ![]() |
Wi-Fi 6 to the masses
After all the major companies released the first high-end Wi-Fi 6 routers, skimming off the enthusiasts, it came to the mass market. So at the beginning of the year, Asus released several similar mid-range models, which, although based on the platform from Broadcom, still look a little expensive against the background of familiar routers. For example, Asus RT-AX56U is a typical representative of the middle class, for which they ask for almost $200. In addition to support for the 802.11ax standard, the price tag is justified by two factors in the face of USB ports and support for Asus' proprietary AirMesh technology.
Classic dual-band router with gigabit port
So, Asus RT-AX56U is a classic dual-band router with a gigabit port and a couple of interesting solutions from Asus. For signal transmission, there are 2 external antennas that can operate at both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. In the first case, we have a throughput of 574 Mbps, in the second, the speed rises to 1201 Mbps. In total, we get 1775 Mbps, which corresponds to the AX1800 device class. In fact, somewhere it happened, both connected smartphones and laptops showed 200 Mbps in 2.4 GHz mode and 900 in 5 GHz mode. When all the electronics available in the house went into battle (and this is about a dozen different gadgets), the router did not flinch and did not try to withdraw into itself, providing stable and high-quality coverage throughout the three-room apartment.
ASUS AiMesh
Now let's see what else the RT-AX56U is capable of. The router has a pair of USB ports to which you can connect an external drive, an LTE modem, or the most common flash drive. Like other Asus routers, it is easy to set up (thanks to the ASUS Router app), friendly with MU-MIMO and Beamforming, and able to work with Asus cloud services (AiCloud and AiDisk). The icing on the cake was ASUS AiMesh technology, which allows you to combine several different company routers into a single seamless network.
In the spring of 2023, we stopped distributing the Internet via Wi-Fi, logged into the service, they reset it to the beginning and found no problems. Having picked it up, he brought it home - he works. I don’t know what the glitch is.
