Among the many new iPhones at the Apple Wonderlust presentation, two updated smartwatch models were also presented: the improved Watch Ultra 2 and the classic Watch Series 9. The main innovations in this generation of smartwatches were a brighter screen with a brightness of 2000 nits, a new S9 processor, updated U2 auxiliary chip and slightly improved sensors for more accurate body measurements. Apple Watch 9 runs version 10 of WatchOS, which includes an updated Smart Stack, new watch faces, improved cycling and walking apps, and support for new gestures.

New Apple S9 processor and U2 support chip

As with the more advanced Watch Ultra 2, the Nine switches to the new U2 support chip, the first version of which was introduced in the iPhone 11 Pro in 2019. This chip should not be confused with the new S9 CPU, which is responsible for overall system performance. U2 is a broadband auxiliary chip designed for faster wireless communications and more accurate navigation. Apple notes that U2 will improve Apple Watch's location capabilities, allowing it to more accurately track devices and people using the Find My app. An impressive innovation is the new double-tap gesture in the air: by tapping twice with the index finger and thumb, the user can quickly answer a voice call or perform other tasks such as playing music. Apple claims that it has long dreamed of such a feature, but was faced with the limitations of the neural blocks of the S8 processor.

Caring for nature

Externally, the “nine” has not changed much compared to previous models. There are new color options, and some components of the case are now made using 3D printing or environmentally friendly materials as part of the concern for the environment. For example, the new strap is made from environmentally friendly FineWoven material. Overall, though, the Watch Series 9 still looks like two peas in a pod, with its aluminum cases (available in 41mm and 45mm sizes) and interchangeable bands. The main characteristics remain the same: built-in NFC chip, high-quality OLED (LTPO) screen with Always-On function, a rich set of built-in sensors and fitness programs, protection from moisture and dust according to the IP68 standard, as well as a battery that can withstand about 18 hours without recharging.
